The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation has launched the NHS Research and Planning Fund to provide support to not-for-profit organizations, registered charities, Indigenous governments and Indigenous organizations undertaking housing research.
Funding for not-for-profit organizations, registered charities and Indigenous partners to advance housing research in Canada. Funds help promote interest, involvement and capacity building in housing research.
The National Housing Strategy Research and Planning Fund supports the development of evidence and highly focused expertise within the affordable housing sector to understand and overcome housing challenges, particularly for vulnerable populations.
Objectives
The overarching objective of the program is to build collaboration, engagement, and alignment with stakeholders to meet common research goals and to help develop the housing community’s research capacity.

Funding & Duration Information
- This fund provides $750,000 annually to fund new and ongoing projects in 4 activity streams:
- Individual research projects: up to $100,000.
- Programs of research: up to $250,000 for a program which can be distributed over 2 years
- Planning activities: up to $50,000
- Knowledge mobilization projects: up to $50,000
- Funds must be used within 2 years of release.
Eligible Projects
- The project must address one or more National Housing Strategy priority areas for action and vulnerable groups.
- At the time of application, partner contributions totaling 25% of the total project cost must be confirmed. Letters from contributing project partners must be included with the application.
- The project must not have been funded through the National Housing Strategy Research and Planning Fund in a previous competition year. Support will not be given to 1 applicant in 2 sequential years for the same project, event or identical activity.
- Funding will only be provided for research projects or activities that will be carried out after the submission deadline.
Eligibility Criteria
- The National Housing Strategy Research and Planning Fund provides support to the following organizations undertaking housing research:
- not-for-profit organizations
- registered charities
- Indigenous governments and organizations
- Lead applicant
- The lead applicant must be an active not-for-profit organization, registered charity, Indigenous government or Indigenous organization in Canada.
- The lead applicant should be able to demonstrate how the organization engages in housing issues and their existing or proposed linkages to the housing sector.
