The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) announces an open competition for organizations interested in promoting internationally recognized labor standards on occupational safety and health in mining industries in Indonesia.
Proposed projects should be designed to achieve the following outcomes:
- Workers understand their rights to health and safety at work and possess the ability to organize in defense of those rights;
- Workers document, report, and seek remedy for labor abuses;
- Labor advocates connect with other advocacy coalitions for greater power and amplified messaging; and
- The public is aware of occupational safety and health abuses in Indonesia’s mineral mining and processing industries.

Eligible Activities
Program activities could include but are not limited to:
- An initial assessment of working conditions in remote mining and production sites, including by building relationships with and interviewing management and workers about their experiences;
- Education for workers on their rights under national law and internationally recognized labor standards, particularly with regard to occupational safety and health;
- Training or information exchange on global best practices for mine safety and health for management;
- Legal assistance for workers to identify and document violations;
- Peer-to-peer learning between labor advocates/independent worker organizations in mining sectors and labor advocates/independent worker organizations in related sectors;
- Development or strengthening of independent worker organizations to advocate for worker rights including health and safety; and
- Alliance building between labor advocates/independent worker organizations in mining sectors and other rights defenders and civil society groups advocating for environmental, land, and protections in related sectors.
Eligibility Criteria
DRL welcomes applications from U.S.-based and foreign-based non-profit organizations/nongovernment organizations (NGO) and public international organizations; private, public, or state institutions of higher education; and for-profit organizations or businesses. DRL’s preference is to work with non-profit entities; however, there may be some occasions when a for-profit entity is best suited.
