The Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, is pleased to announce an open competition for eligible organizations to submit applications to carry out a project to highlight, raise public awareness, and preserve Afghanistan’s diverse cultural heritage.
The goal of this effort is to promote the civic virtues of tolerance and equality for all, appreciation of diversity, and national pride by building community and national awareness of Afghanistan’s rich heritage. This project will provide civic education on the responsibility of citizens, government officials, and democratic institutions to preserve Afghanistan’s diverse identity, cultural expression, and heritage, resulting in an informed citizenry with the civic skills necessary to create the collective action required to afford enduring protection. Selection of projects will seek to preserve an endangered or threatened aspect of traditional forms of cultural expression or elements of tangible heritage such as monuments, sites, built structures, artifacts, and museum collections.
Project Objectives
Proposed projects should:
- Contribute to the preservation of an endangered aspect of Afghanistan’s tangible or intangible heritage.
- Raise public awareness about the value of Afghanistan’s diverse cultural heritage through different media platforms.
- Involve youth or students in aspects of project design, implementation, or sustainability.
- Engender and leverage community pride in endangered local cultural heritage artifacts, craft practices, or monuments to provide additional safeguards and sustainability.

- Number of Awards Anticipated: 2 – 4
- Anticipated Award Amount:
- Base Period: The floor for the base period is set at $300,000. The ceiling for the base period is set at $650,000.
- Option Period One: The floor for option period one is set at $100,000. The ceiling for option period one is set at $300,000.
- Anticipated Performance Period:
- Base Period: 24 months
- Option Period One: 12 months
Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility is open to all types of applicants except for individuals.
