The City of Boca Raton is seeking Request For Qualifications from artists for a Recycled Material Art Project made from discarded materials to be located in the grassy area adjacent to A1A near the South Beach Park Pavilion.
The City is currently accepting applications from artists skilled in visual arts, specifically artwork using recycled materials, raising awareness of the growing plastic pollution problem in the oceans and encouraging conservation and waste reduction in the community.
The preferred artist(s) will have an extensive background with artwork using recycled/re-purposed materials, such as discarded plastics and items found on the beaches. (Documentation that demonstrates experience must be provided.)
Proposed artwork should: encourage creative ways to repurpose, recycle, conserve, and educate the community about the harmful effects of pollution and plastics on marine life, and inspire sustainable actions through an aesthetically pleasing artistic creation.
Funding Information
- Amounts to cover artists’ expenses, including but not limited to supplies, site preparation, installation and clean-up may be granted: $10,000.00 total to the selected artist(s).
Eligibility Criteria
All proposals for referenced artwork shall meet the following criteria:
- Is developed enough to provide the City Council with a clear understanding of the purpose, content and media of the artwork and its relationship to the Beaches, the City of Boca Raton’s commitment to raising awareness of the growing plastic pollution problem in the oceans and encouraging conservation and waste reduction in the community;
- The artwork showcases a compelling, marine-themed, artistic piece made from trash and debris found in and around the oceans and waterways;
- Improves the overall aesthetic appearance of the South Beach Park Pavilion area and nearby beach;
- Generates awareness of and attracts support for recycling, reusing and reducing waste, as well as reducing the growing plastic pollution problem in the oceans and beaches;
- Encourages future support and efforts towards recycling and conservation;
- Promotes the general view of the City of Boca Raton as a supporter of recycling and conservation, South Florida culture, creativity, and entrepreneurial energy;
- Is readily visible to the public;
- Is of exceptional quality and enduring value subject to the potential impact from salt, weather, and fading from the sun, while using recycled materials;
- Is appropriate scale to the South Beach Pavilion Park entrance and the nearby park area;
- Will not be detrimental to the public welfare;
- Will not constitute a safety hazard;
- Does not contain graffiti-type art, nudity, profanity or political, religious, commercial, obscene or violent images, language and/or themes; and
- Meets all applicable provisions of the City Code, and specifications within the Call to Artist with regard to the maximum size for the artwork and the base/foundation.
