The centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced the Expansion of Comprehensive Suicide Prevention across the United States.
Program Details
- There is no single cause of suicide and suicide risks include more than mental health concerns alone. Factors increasing suicide risk occur at the individual, relationship, community, and societal levels and may include:
- relationship problems such as divorce/break-up or intimate partner violence,
- job/financial problems such as unemployment or eviction),
- health problems,
- loss of a friend/relative to suicide,
- criminal/legal issues, such as losing custody of a child or an arrest,
- prior suicide attempts,
- access to lethal means among people at risk,
- mental health concerns,
- lack of access to care,
- stigma associated with mental illness and/or help-seeking, and
- prejudice or discrimination.

Activities
- Assistance in identifying potential partners or collaborators
- Assistance in identifying relevant data sources and consultation on analysis and use, especially for non-traditional data systems or analytic methods
- Development of annual reports sharing national trends of emergency department visits related to nonfatal suicide-related outcomes (e.g., suicidal ideation, suicide attempts)
- Participation with recipients in syndromic surveillance workgroups
- Participation in the identification of appropriate prevention strategies, including request for evidence of non-CDC technical package programs or practices
- Assistance in developing the communication plan and success stories
- Consultation in the implementation of prevention programs and discussion of any policy-related activities as part of the required comprehensive strategy
- Convening of all-recipient calls to provide group technical assistance or to support group networking and sharing
- Invitation to join a Slack channel for recipient networking
- Presentations by CDC on topics of interest to recipients such as best practices, syndromic surveillance, and adaptation of strategies.
