The International Renaissance Foundation (IRF) has launched the Open Call for Small Grants to support Environmental public initiatives from the south-eastern regions of Ukraine during the war.
Purpose
- The purpose of the competition is
- To support the environmental initiatives of those organizations that are still in the east and south of Ukraine or were forced to move in connection with the military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, but are interested in implementing their environmental initiatives in an accessible and safe way;
- Create an opportunity for eco-activists from the south-eastern regions to be involved in the planning processes of green recovery of Ukraine and to advocate ecological principles in strategies for the recovery/development of territorial communities.
Contest Participants
- Contest participants are civil society organizations that take care of environmental issues and are registered in the following regions: Donetsk and Luhansk (territories controlled by the government of Ukraine as of February 24, 2022), as well as Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, and Kherson regions.
- Preference will be given to organizations whose activities are directly related to environmental issues in the southeastern regions of Ukraine. However, the applicant organization does not necessarily have to be physically present at the place of registration at the time of submitting the project proposal.
Funding Information
- The optimal budget for one project is from 200,000 to 350,000 hryvnias.
- Duration of the project: the total duration is 6-8 months from the beginning of the grant agreement.
Activities
- Types of activities that can be included in the project implementation plan (the list is not exhaustive):
- Measures to increase the institutional capacity of their teams and strategic planning of the applicant organization in new realities, in particular, regarding the implementation of the principles of green restoration of territorial communities.
- Measures to document environmental damage caused by Russian military aggression (any formats).
- Measures to identify existing environmental problems in territorial communities and develop proposals for ways to solve these problems in the period when it becomes possible.
- Strengthening citizens’ awareness and demand for ecosystem solutions during the planning of recovery of Ukraine, in particular at the level of territorial communities.
- Various advocacy actions aimed at protecting the environment, including participation in network environmental initiatives.
- Analysis of the selected environmental problem or diagnosis of the state of local natural objects (if it is safe), which cause concern of the territorial community.
- Analysis of the interdependence of environmental problems and security issues of territorial communities (with the development of conclusions and recommendations).
- Communication measures that accompany the project and are based on the materials of one’s own activities (including research, observations, analysis).
- Dovkillev activities, important for territorial communities where members of relocated applicant organizations from the regions are currently located.
Criteria
- Criteria by which project proposals will be evaluated:
- compliance of the submitted project proposal with the purpose of the competition;
- the focus of the project goal and the mutual correspondence of all sections of the project proposal;
- the realism of project implementation, a clear plan for its implementation, certainty of expected results;
- projected impact of the project on achieving positive changes in the applicant organization;
- structured communication component of the project;
- previous experience of environmental activities of the participants of the competition;
- consideration of the principles of non-discrimination and gender equality in the planned project activity;
- weightedness of the budget of the project proposal, clear correspondence of the expenditure items of the activity plan;
- the involvement of other partners in project activities (in particular, representatives of the territorial community) is an advantage.
