The Auckland Council is now accepting applications for its Regional Sport and Recreation Programme Grant to provide operational funding for a range of regional programmes that encourage Aucklanders to be more active, more often.
The programme grant focuses primarily on enabling children and young people to participate in sport and recreation, and on providing affordable access to sport and recreation to groups with low participation numbers. These groups include Maori, people with health and wellbeing needs, and those facing other barriers, such as affordability and accessibility.

The programme gant is run once a year and allocates up to $508,000 annually. There is no minimum or maximum amount that can be applied for each year. Please be aware that council funding should not be regarded as the sole funding source for your programme i.e, they recommend that you do not apply for 100 per cent of the cost of the programme.
Outcomes
The grants programme will support applications with outcomes that:
- provide affordable and accessible options for participation in informal physical activity, recreation and sport
- ensure their diverse communities enjoy healthy and active lifestyles
- increase Māori participation in sport and recreation activities.
What is Eligible for Regional Grants?
- Annual grants are available to organisations seeking operational funding for regional programmes that encourage Aucklanders to be more active, more often. They most often allocate one-year grants, but organisations may apply for multi-year grants. You can apply for grants for programmes that:
- enable children and young people to develop skills to help them have lifelong participation in sport and recreation
- provide or support easier and more affordable access to sport and recreation to populations with low participation rates, particularly:
- Maori
- children and young people
- populations with health and wellbeing needs
- those facing other barriers, e.g. affordability, accessibility.
- To be eligible to apply to the programme, applications are required to be:
- addressing regionally determined priorities
- and regional in terms of scale and/or significance
- and/or regional in terms of impact and/or reach.
Eligibility Criteria
- Your organisation is eligible to apply for this grant if it is:
- a recreation and sport ‘umbrella organisation’ with a region-wide mandate
- a regional federation, or grouping of local or sub-regional sports code organisations
- a sport and recreation provider or advocacy group
- an iwi or Māori organisation active in the sport and recreation sector.
- They will not fund:
- programmes outside of their region
- capital projects
- local programmes.
