The UN Women SAMCO seeks to partner with an organization to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment across Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia, and South Africa.
UN Women is seeking proposals from qualified organizations based and registered in South Africa for more than 5 years to play an innovative and catalytic role in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment in South Africa. This initiative aims to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) through innovative financing strategies and private sector engagement. The selected organization will be responsible for delivering comprehensive interventions that align with national priorities and UN Women’s mandate. Key services required include:
- Run campaigns to raise awareness about gender issues, challenge harmful social norms, and promote positive change.
- Build alliances with other organizations, businesses, and stakeholders to strengthen efforts and create a unified approach to gender equality.
- Develop and test new approaches to address gender inequality and empower women.
- Resource Mobilisation that advances Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment GEWE
Objectives
- Play an innovative and catalytic role in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment across five Southern African countries through the UN Women SAMCO.
- Advance innovative financing strategies to promote SDG 5 by engaging the private sector through public-private partnerships, impact investing, and corporate social responsibility initiatives.
- Seek strategic partnerships to establish and coordinate a network of private sector brands committed to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment across the SACU.
- Mobilize private financial resources and increase funding for gender equality priorities.
- Foster a diverse and inclusive private sector that supports women’s participation, leadership, and access to essential services.
- Leverage the influence and reach of companies in Southern Africa to create impactful campaigns that transform harmful social norms and support development initiatives promoting Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE)
Funding Information
- The budget range for this proposal should be [$20 000 –$ 50 000 (Min. – Max. )]
- This partnership is set to run for a duration of 5.5 months.
- Start date 20 July 2025, end date 31 December 2025.
Expected Deliverables
- Develop and implement resource mobilization strategies from companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) Limited, as well as other private sector partners and existing Women’s Empowerment Principles WEP Signatories Engage investors, and partners to secure funding for Gender Equality Women Empowerment (GEWE)
- Support with UN international days and amplification with private sector– support amplification for SDG 5 and 17 for within Private Sector and funding of Gender Equality Women Empowerment
- Revive Unstereotype Alliance South Africa Chapter and mobilise new membership
- Coordinate annual WEP Awards to motivate private sector engagement on signing up and implementing WEPS within their companies
- Increased funding and resources for gender equality initiatives, effective utilization of resources, and sustained support for GEWE programs.
Competencies
- Demonstrated understanding of Gender Equality and Women Empowerment (GEWE)
- Proven ability to engage private sector for more than 10 years
- More than 10 years’ experience in building alliances with other organizations, businesses, and stakeholders to strengthen efforts and create a unified approach to gender equality.
- More than 10 years’ experience in running public awareness campaigns to raise awareness about gender issues, challenge harmful social norms, and promote positive change.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences and stakeholders’ specifically private sector.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders, fostering an inclusive environment.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement resource mobilization strategies, engage donors and investors, and manage resources effectively to support gender equality initiatives
- Expertise in coordinating events for Call to Action on Gender Equality & Women Empowerment
- Proven ability to effectively demonstrate principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).
