Deadline: 30-Sep-22
Media Defence in partnership with the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law, Media Calling for applications from lawyers and organisations based in the Asia-Pacific region for grants to fund strategic litigation related to media freedom.
As part of their work to help build a strong global legal defence network for independent media, they fund strategic litigation. This is litigation that aims to improve the legal environment for media freedom. They support strategic litigation that covers a wide range of issues faced by the media. This includes restrictions introduced to limit the spread of COVID-19 that are open to abuse, internet shutdowns, the use of criminal laws to target legitimate speech, judicial harassment, the right to be forgotten, source protection, arbitrary detention and torture, and violence and impunity.
Media Defence is a charity, based in London, which provides legal help to journalists, citizen journalists and independent media across the world. Media Defence’s vision is a world where journalists no longer face legal challenges that threaten their ability to report freely and independently on issues of public interest, allowing citizens to be better informed, able to hold those in power to account. Their mission is to ensure legal protection of journalists and media workers under threat for reporting on issues of public interest, in the belief that freedom of expression is essential.
