The AB Charitable trust is seeking applications to support work that promotes human dignity and defends the human rights of marginalised and excluded people.
Their focus is on supporting the most marginalised and excluded groups in the UK, who are often from communities experiencing poverty and racial inequality.
People who migrate, are refugees or seeking asylum, and people involved in the criminal justice system, are often the subject of negative public narrative – and being unpopular causes, can be difficult to fundraise for. In supporting access to justice, they recognise that high-quality legal advice and representation is a powerful tool to help bring about both individual redress and systemic change.
They usually fund single focus organisations working solely in their priority areas. For these organisations, they generally give core funding (unrestricted grants).
Priority Areas
They fund small to medium sized charities work in three priority areas:
- Migrants and refugees
- Criminal Justice and Penal Reforms
- Human Rights, Paricularly Access to Justice
Funding Information
Open programme grants are usually between £10,000 to £20,000 and awarded annually.
What they Fund?
The AB Charitable Trust works with charities which do any or all of the following:
- Deliver services to improve outcomes for individuals (and their families) who are in the criminal justice system (at any stage, from contact with police to courts and prison)
- Support effective rehabilitation in the community
- Work to influence policy and to reform the criminal justice system
- Strengthen the sector and support charities delivering work in this area
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for their open programme, an applicant charity will:
- Work in one of their priority areas
- Be registered as a UK charity, delivering work in the UK
- Have an annual income between £150k and £1.5m
- Have operated for at least a year and be able to provide a full year’s audited or independently examined accounts
Ineligible
- Individuals
- The promotion of religion
- Capital appeals
- Academic research
- Charities with large national links.
