The Mary Kay Foundation is seeking applications for its program entitled “Domestic Violence Shelter Grant” with an aim to break the silence on violence against women by providing resources that promote a greater understanding of the issue and effect social change.
Mary Kay is committed to helping women whose safety and self-esteem are threatened due to violence. By raising awareness of this issue, the foundation foster understanding and give hope and help to women affected by violence.
Program Challenges
Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive and controlling behaviors that a person uses against an intimate or former partner. It might include:
- Physical Abuse: Shoving, hitting, kicking, burning, choking, using weapons or other objects to cause injury; restraining.
- Sexual Violence: Forcing or coercing unwanted sexual acts, refusing to practice safer sex, treating a partner like a sex object.
- Emotional Abuse/Intimidation: Namecalling/put-downs; denying/shifting blame; treating a partner as an inferior; threatening to harm others/self or to reveal information that might be harmful; using threatening looks, actions, or gestures.
- Property/Economic Abuse: Destroying/ stealing property; denying money for basic needs such as food or medical care; interfering with a partner’s work or education.
- Stalking: Monitoring activities, phone calls, or emails; following a partner; impersonating or questioning others about a partner. This may be done without the victim’s knowledge.
Funding Information
The Foundation awarded $20,000 grants to more than 150 women’s domestic violence shelters across the nation for a total of $3 million.
Eligibility Criteria
- The Mary Kay Foundation observes National Domestic Violence Awareness Month by awarding grants to deserving women’s domestic violence shelters across the United States.
- Each year, the Foundation awards a grant to at least one domestic violence shelter in every state that applies.
- Any remaining funds are distributed based on state population. Grant applications are reviewed by the Domestic Violence Shelter Grant Committee, which makes recommendations to the TMKF Board of Directors.
