The Hackney Council has announced Project Grants (including Children & Young People’s Fund) to provide grant investment that continues to increase opportunities for Hackney residents and delivers services which make a difference to people’s lives.
Aims & Priorities
- The Grants Programme focuses on one of Hackney Council’s Equality Objectives which is:
- To deliver actions which aim to narrow the gap in outcomes between certain disadvantaged groups and the wider community they consider the Grants Programme to be a strong means for achieving this Equality Objective and every grant-funded project is expected to contribute towards this.
- The 2022/23 grant programme will continue to focus on these two priorities:
- To promote social inclusion, encourage independence and develop personal resilience
- To build positive relations between different groups and communities that will maintain the high levels of community cohesion in Hackney.

Purpose
- The purpose of Project Grants fund is to fund short-term activities that are working towards the grant programme objective and priorities. If your project is working exclusively with Young People you should apply for the Children & Young People’s Fund.
Outcomes
- Organisations will be asked to describe which of the following outcomes they will be working towards with their project.
- Identity and belonging – Young people are supported to explore and understand their identity and a sense of belonging. Supporting young people in understanding their prejudices, valuing diversity and equity and creating safe spaces where oppressive behaviors and views are challenged.
- Being healthy – Young people are supported to become more active and to explore and understand issues relevant to the development of healthy relationships, positive physical, and emotional and mental health.
- Making a positive contribution – Young people are supported to develop their leadership, civic engagement and participation and to develop their understanding of the environment, sustainable development, globalization, social justice and human rights.
- Achieving economic and financial wellbeing – Young people are supported to have more control over the economic and financial aspects of their lives, build entrepreneurship, and develop their skills, interests and passions.
- Enjoying and achieving – Young people are supported to have opportunities to explore their creativity, develop their passion and skills, and to explore their social, cultural and community heritage as creators, audience members, visitors, and curators.
- Being safe – Young people are supported to develop their critical thinking skills and understanding and management of risk, both on and/or offline.
Funding Information
- Organisations applying for Children & Young People’s Grants can apply for a maximum of £10,000 as per the income .
- In addition to this, there is a restriction on the maximum amount that organisations are able to apply for. This means that organisations cannot apply for more than 50% of their most recent full year’s annual turnover. For example, an organisation with an annual income of £15,000 may not apply for a grant amount that exceeds £7,500. If an organization has an annual income of over £40,000 per year then this restriction will not impact them.
Beneficiaries
- Organisations will be asked to describe which of the following groups their main target is beneficiary group.
- Disabled people or people with Special Educational Needs
- Ex-offenders/people at risk of offending
- Homelessness/housing instability
- LGBTQi+ (including gender reassignment)
- NEET people (not in education, employment or training)
- Older people (over 60)
- People affected by domestic & sexual violence
- People experiencing mental health issues or substance misuse
- People with caring responsibilities
- Refugees and/or asylum seekers
- Younger people (under 25)
Eligibility Criteria
- Applications are accepted from any constituted voluntary, community or recreational group working within the London Borough of Hackney. These are typically the following organisations:
- Registered charity or Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO)
- Charitable company or Social Enterprise (companies must have asset locks, be wholly not-for-profit and without share capital)
- Community Interest Company (CIC)
- Company limited by guarantee (companies must have asset locks, be wholly not-for-profit and without share capital)
- Cooperative and Community Benefit Society
- For Community Chest applications only, they accept applications from structured groups of local residents who have formed for a specific purpose. They may be an established group who have been meeting for a number of years or a group who have recently formed for a one-off event or purpose.
- Applicants must:
- Have a constitution and registration number.
- Have a bank account held in the name of the organisation.
- Have an appropriate level of insurance coverage for their project and activities.
- Have appropriate safeguarding policies and procedures for their project activities.
- Have an annual income of between £10,000 – £1,000,000.
- Demonstrate at least 80% of the people benefiting from the project will be Hackney residents.
