UNDP Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam is seeking qualified organisations to submit a Concept Proposal for the Sustainable Tourism Recovery (Sustainable Tourism) project to be implemented between October 2022 and 2023.
The Sustainable Tourism project is designed to address several endogenous and exogenous challenges affecting the tourism industry in three specific geographical areas of Malaysia (Mersing, Setiu and Manjung).
However, it is primarily centred around the government’s ambition to address the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the domestic tourism sector by focusing on building the resilience of destination communities and MSME businesses. At the same time, the opportunity is also taken to encourage the desired transformation towards more environmentally and inclusive tourism as advocated in its national ecotourism plan (2016-2025) and the latest National Tourism Policy (2020-2030).

Funding Information
- The maximum amount of grant available from Sustainable Tourism project:
- Full Project: no more than USD 50,000 (equivalent in Ringgit Malaysia).
- The duration of each grant project may vary from six to 12 months. Project activity completion must be no later than October 2023.
Eligible Project Activities
- All project proposals submitted will need to demonstrate:
- Impact of the proposed activities on the tourism sector.
- Demonstrate strong local community involvement and decision-making process in the proposed project.
- Focus on ecotourism with special attention on conservation issues and improvement of community livelihood Participation of women/engagement/interaction with women will be highly advantageous
Eligibility Criteria
- Locally registered Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Community Based Organisations (CBOs), Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and enterprises. The applicant who fails to provide a copy of the certificate of registration will not be considered. Possesses local registered bank account of the organisation.
- Organisation must have the organisational capacity to implement Sustainable Tourism projects and meets the requirements as below. An independent capacity assessment exercise will be organized on all shortlisted applicants to verify applicant’s implementation capacity based on:
- Prior experience and track record;
- Technical expertise;
- Statutory reporting;
- Use of the right project management tools;
- Clear institutional set-up and financial fiduciary systems in place to ensure grant objectives are met within the timeframe; and
- Experience in managing and reporting donor funds.
- Organisations that have existing activities or are operating at the respective destinations will have added advantages.
- UNDP will consider respective destination organisations that require capacity-building assistance.
