The Loudoun Preservation Society (LPS) is offering 2021 Historic Preservation Grants Program to ensure that historically and architecturally significant sites in Loudoun County are not lost due to neglect or disinterest.
Loudoun County has a rich and diverse architectural heritage that the members of LPS believe should be preserved for future generations. To this goal, LPS will commit its resources and efforts.
Funding Information
- Four of Loudoun County’s premier historical institutions received multiple grants totaling over $30,000 each: George C. Marshall House, Loudoun Museum, Oatlands, and Waterford. Another 25 organizations received over $10,000 each.
- The total amount of LPS grants has been $890,149.
Eligibility Criteria
- Grant awards are used in historic preservation projects and studies in Loudoun County.
- Only nonprofit and government organizations are eligible for grant awards.
- If the application is for an item or building, the applicant must be the owner of the item or property.
Criteria
Grants are given by the Loudoun Preservation Society (LPS) annually to assist nonprofit and governmental organizations in preservation projects including:
- Restoration and preservation of historic structures or other built features in Loudoun County including stabilization, repair, and/or historically sensitive improvement following historic preservation guidelines such as those of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
- Conservation in museum collections within Loudoun County of artifacts critical to documenting, telling, or showing crucial aspects of Loudoun’s history.
- Publication or online posting of historical, architectural, or archaeological research of a particular structure, property, site, district, community, or transportation feature important to Loudoun’s historical landscape if the publication may enhance its appreciation and further
- encourage historic preservation in the county.
- Design and implementation of a school or public program to promote appreciation of Loudoun’s historic built landscape and the need for and value of historic preservation therein.
Please keep in mind the following as you apply for an LPS grant:
- Grants will be awarded at the discretion of the Board of Directors of LPS.
- Of paramount concern to LPS is the historical value to Loudoun of the project.
- The decision will also be based on the nature, purpose, methods, and merits of the proposal as you have presented it. LPS may have further questions for you.
- LPS may partially fund a grant request.
- The funds available from the Loudoun Preservation Society for grants vary from year to year based on the success of the board and membership in fundraising.
- Because LPS board members and membership have to RAISE these grant funds in a market competitive for local non-profits, they expect that your non-profit will show a vested interest in your project by partially funding it as well. If it is not worth your organization at least partially funding it, this indicates to LPS that it is neither a priority for you nor should it be for them in competition with other projects.
- Your project should not already have been completed prior to the grant.
- Within 12 months of the grant being given, a report showing significant progress, implementation, or completion of the project should be filed with the Board of Directors of the Loudoun Preservation Society. Digital photos or a copy of the completed work are helpful here. A report at the LPS Annual Preservation Grants program may be requested. Your project may be used to promote others.
