The California Humanities is pleased to announce Relief Grants Program (Round 2) that aims to prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from the coronavirus.
This funding is meant to assist public humanities organizations and cultural institutions. The Relief Grant program will direct funds for short term general operating support that will enable applicants to meet the immediate needs of their communities and respond to current challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In keeping with California Humanities’ mission, these Relief Grants aim to provide support to organizations that have experienced the cancellation of their public humanities activities due to a decrease or loss of revenue, cancellation of programming opportunities, or loss of paid staff or venues as a direct result of COVID-19.
Funding Information
- Relief Grants will direct funds between $5,000 and $20,000 for short-term general operating support to public humanities-focused organizations to meet the immediate needs of their communities and respond to the current challenges presented by the pandemic.
- Grant requests can be no more than 10% of an organization’s current operating budget.
- Matching funds are not required but award funds may be used to supplement (or match) resources (cash and/or in-kind) received from other sources.
Activities
Appropriate activities include, but are not limited to:
- Staff salaries and fringe benefits for programmatic and/or project administrative personnel
- Professional fees, including honoraria and stipends for humanities advisors, interviewees, artists, technical consultants, etc.
- Programming, publication, dissemination expenses
- Supplies and materials for all organizational activities
- Equipment costs below 20% of the overall grant award (rental, unless purchase cost is less)
- Administrative expenses including phone, postage, photocopying, and printing
- Marketing expenses (e.g., design, printing, distribution of announcements or flyers, ad placement)
- Evaluation expenses
- Documentation expenses (e.g., videography of events)
- Food costs incurred by organization across any of its programs
- Fiscal sponsor or indirect administrative fees (only up to 10% of your request)
Note: Although current California Humanities board members may serve as advisors or consultants to projects, they may not be compensated from California Humanities grant funds for any goods or services they provide.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applications will be accepted from California-based public agencies and California-based nonprofit organizations, accredited public and 501(c)(3) institutions of higher education, state and local government agencies, and federally recognized Native American tribal governments with a minimum two-year organizational history.
- Applicants that would like to apply under an eligible fiscal sponsor must be able to demonstrate that the fiscal sponsor will make substantive contributions to the success of the project (see FAQs for details).
- Applicants will be accepted from recognized humanities provider organizations (museum, library, archive, historical society, cultural center, public media outlets, humanities department or division of a K-12 educational institution, college, university, or tribal government).
- AND other organizations that can demonstrate a substantial track record of public humanities work within the past five years. Make sure it is clear in your application how your organization satisfies this public humanities requirement.
- Prior grant history with California Humanities is NOT required.
