Deadline: 28-Feb-22
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has announced Promoting Reproductive Health for Adolescents and Adults with Disabilities (R01 Clinical Trial Optional) to support projects that propose research into underlying social and behavioral processes that can inform interventions (basic science), preliminary development and testing of interventions (translational science), or dissemination and implementation of interventions.
Objectives
- The proposed research should have the potential to either:
- reduce barriers to appropriate reproductive (gynecologic and urologic) care experienced by PWD (including access to care providers and appropriate counseling and screening during visits); or
- increase effective use of existing medications and devices for contraception and infectious disease prevention by persons with disabilities (PWD).
- Research topics responsive to this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Qualitative or mixed-methods studies of barriers to reproductive health care for PWD
- Development of reproductive health education materials or decision-making aids for use by PWD, caregivers, partners, or non-clinicians in home or community settings
- Development of clinician education materials or decision-making aids to support the capacity of health care professionals to provide reproductive health care to PWD in clinical settings
- Development of counseling or decision-making aids about preserving future fertility potential and fertility options for PWD
- Adaptations to existing devices or medical equipment for reproductive care to the needs of PWD
- Supports for adherence to existing medication regimens targeted to the needs of PWD
- Adaptations to existing clinical preventive screening and counseling protocols to the needs of PWD
- Interventions targeting PWD directly or through collaborative processes with partners or caregivers
- Persons with disabilities is a broad category and projects may include individuals with functional limitations in one or more categories of mobility, dexterity, hearing, vision, or cognition (i.e. physical, sensory, intellectual, or developmental disabilities).
