Deadline: 04-Jan-2026
Entries are now open for the FASPE Law Fellowship Program to critically examine constructs, current developments and issues that raise ethical concerns in their professions in contemporary settings in which they work.
FASPE Law Fellows examine topics such as the complicity of German lawyers in the design and execution of Nazi racial laws and genocidal policies, the difference between legal compliance and rules of ethics, on the one hand, and ethical behavior, on the other, the ethical challenges of ambition in professional development, ethics and government lawyering, legal ethics in the context of technological innovations, navigating multiple loyalties to employers, clients, systems of justice, legal frameworks and more, and tactics to address ethical issues within law firms and other institutions.
Each year, the fellowship selects 13 to 16 outstanding law students and early-career lawyers to participate in a fully funded two-week program in Berlin and Poland. The program combines seminars led by expert faculty with visits to key historical sites of Nazi history, offering a powerful and immersive educational experience. Beyond academic discussions, the fellowship emphasizes creative exchange, shared learning, and professional growth in a collaborative environment.
FASPE values diversity and seeks applicants from a wide range of legal backgrounds, including those working in law firms, public service, corporate legal departments, and public interest law. Eligible candidates may be enrolled JD students in their second or third year, early-career lawyers with a JD earned after May 2019, or legal trainees and associates from education systems where law is not a postgraduate degree. Applicants are expected to demonstrate leadership potential, self-reflection, and openness to challenging discussions.
The application process requires an online form, resume or CV, academic transcripts, short essay responses, and two letters of recommendation. Recommenders are asked to highlight an applicant’s academic achievements, capacity for leadership, communication skills, and ability to engage responsibly in difficult conversations. Letters must be submitted directly by January 9, 2026.
FASPE is committed to covering all program costs and related travel so that financial ability does not affect participation. Costs covered include roundtrip economy-class airfare from the US to Europe, all transportation for group travel and activities in Germany and Poland, admission fees, program materials, hotel accommodations, and group meals. Pocket money is also provided to cover non-group meals, and travel costs to Berlin from other points of origin, along with the return flight, are fully supported. Application closes on 4 January 2026.
