The African Group of Negotiators Expert Support (AGNES) has designed this training Program on climate governance, diplomacy and negotiations leadership with a view to address this important continental challenge.
The overall objective of the Program is to build and strengthen African climate leaders and to improve their knowledge and negotiation skills to enable them to engage effectively in international climate change policy discourse as well as contribute to the successful implementation of climate actions at regional and national levels.
The course is organized into four modules: Physical Science Basis of Climate Change, IPCC Processes, Climate Leadership and Communications, and Climate Diplomacy and Negotiations. The Physical Science Basis module covers topics such as weather and climate, global climate systems, greenhouse gas emissions, vulnerability, adaptation, and resilience.
The IPCC Processes module provides insights into the IPCC structure, its reports, policies, and procedures. The Climate Leadership and Communications module focuses on leadership principles, ethics, and strategic communication in climate action. The Climate Diplomacy and Negotiations module trains participants in international climate diplomacy, negotiation theories, UNFCCC mechanisms, and practical negotiation exercises including simulations and role play.
The Program targets policymakers and decision makers involved in developing and implementing national and subnational climate policies, climate scientists and researchers from academia and think tanks, climate negotiators and international diplomats, representatives of non-state actors including international organizations, NGOs, and the private sector working on climate and environmental issues, as well as jurists engaged in climate change and environmental governance.
