Innovation is positioning African agricultural systems for a productive and sustainable future. In light of this transformation process, the International Fertilizer Association (IFA) and Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) have launched the Africa Agtech Startup Showcase.

The largest gathering of the fertilizer industry, and the winning startup will receive a €20,000 prize.
Eligibility Criteria
- This international contest is open to entrepreneurs offering innovative responses to the challenges facing African agriculture to showcase their solutions to the plant nutrition industry. The IFA and UM6P judges will evaluate applications based on the competition criteria including impact, innovation and applicability to African smallholder farmers. Final selection will take place in May 2023 at the IFA Annual Conference.
- UM6P prioritizes applied research and innovation relevant to Morocco and Africa by focusing on topics such as industrialization, food security, sustainable development, mining, behavioural and social sciences. It federates a number of schools and research institutes, covering science and technology (Agriculture, mining, energy, medical, chemistry, Computer Science…), Social Sciences and Business Management.

African Peacebuilding Network: Individual Research Fellowships

The African Peacebuilding Network (APN) of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) invites research fellowship applications from African researchers, policy analysts, and practitioners working on conflict and peacebuilding issues at universities and research institutions; or regional, governmental, and nongovernmental agencies or organizations based in Africa.

Up to eighteen (18) individual fellowships of a maximum of $15,000 each will be awarded.
Fellowships are awarded on a competitive, peer-reviewed basis and are intended to support six months of field-based research, from June 2022 to December 2022.
Eligibility Criteria
- Women are strongly encouraged to apply.
- All applicants must be African citizens currently residing in an African country. This competition is open to African academics, as well as policy analysts and practitioners.
- Applicants who are academics must hold a faculty or research position at an African university or research organization, and have a PhD obtained no earlier than January 2012.
- Applicants who are policy analysts or practitioners must be based in Africa at a regional or sub-regional institution; a government agency; or a nongovernmental, media, or civil society organization, and have at least a master’s degree obtained before January 2017, with at least five years of proven research and work experience in peacebuilding-related activities on the continent.

The Mozilla has launched the In Real Life (IRL) Fund to support movement building efforts contributing to the development, utility and governance of technologies because of the impact each has on issues of social justice, both on and offline.
The IRL Fund supports initiatives, projects and strategies led by African organizations that contribute towards a healthy internet. Specifically, they seek ideas that strengthen digital and human rights and impact communities “In Real Life”. This is a new, exploratory grantmaking mechanism intended to build a cohort of partners working on initiatives that address real challenges in the African continent.
Medical Research Foundation Grant Program for Researchers in Sub-Saharan Africa

Funding Information
- Applicants may apply for funding for a visit to a UK research organisation for between one to three months.
- Applicants may apply for up to £5,000 for one month in the UK, £9,000 for two months in the UK and a maximum of £13,000 for three months in the UK to support travel, visas, subsistence and research consumables during the applicant’s stay at the UK research organisation.
- The Foundation is committed to awarding between three to six Meade Collaborative Travel Grants per year, depending on the length of the visits. This competition will run once per year.

Green Tourism Incentive Programme in South Africa

The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) is seeking applications for Green Tourism Incentive Programme (“GTIP”) with a key objective of encouraging and assisting privately-owned tourism enterprises to adopt responsible tourism practices through installing solutions for the sustainable management and usage of electricity and water resources.
Eligibility Criteria
- Eligibility Criteria: application for Energy and Water Efficiency Audit (Phase 1)
- Be an existing or a new privately-owned tourism-specific establishment (accommodation, facilities and attractions) that provide services to tourists as its direct clients. Suppliers and intermediaries are not eligible;
- New establishments to be at least at advanced stages of development where delay and completion risk is minimal (minimum requirements include a detailed business plan that is fully funded, an implementation plan – completion date of the projects should not be longer than 9 months from the date of applying for funding, approved building plans and relevant clearance certificates may be required, where applicable);
- Be an Exempt Micro Enterprise or a Qualifying Small Enterprises in line with the size categorization of the Tourism Broad-Based
- Black Economic Empowerment Scorecard as follows:
- Enterprise size category
- Exempt Micro Enterprises (EMEs)
- Qualifying Small Enterprises (QSEs).
- Annual turnover
- Total annual revenue below R5 million
- Total annual revenue between R5 million and R45 million.
- Must commit to a resource efficiency audit or review of an existing audit by an assessor appointed by the GTIP;
Must provide 12 months historic energy and/or water consumption data (in the form of utility bills) and occupancy records for the purposes of conducting the resource efficiency audit; - Must commit to obtaining quotations from at least three potential service providers/installers that meet the requirements of the GTIP for the identified energy and water efficiency solutions identified during the audit process;
- All applicants are required to complete an application form with the required documentation (including business registration documents; valid tax compliance PIN and latest audited or reviewed annual financial statements) in order to be allocated an assessor who will conduct an energy and water efficiency audit.
- Qualifying Criteria application for Funding (Phase 2)
- Eligible applicants (having completed Phase 1) are required to demonstrate economic viability to be considered for funding.
Requirements application for funding - To apply for grant funding, all applicants should meet the following criteria:
In the case of accommodation and conference venues, an official star grading by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA) is required. Significant upfront discounts on grading fees are offered by TGCSA through the Tourism Grading Support Programme incentive. - Where required, new establishments must commit to obtaining an official star grading by TGCSA no longer than 3 months from completion of the development;
- All applicants are required to complete an application form for funding, and submit the most recent supporting documentation (including 2 years latest audited or reviewed annual financial statements; management accounts (not older than 3 months); 3 years budget/forecast in the format contained in the application form; a Tourism B-BBEE certificate or sworn affidavit in line with the Amended Tourism B-BBEE Sector Code; FICA documentation; resource efficiency audit report; copy of a valid lease agreement of no less than 5 years or proof of ownership of the property); quotations and potential service providers/installers details as per the energy and water efficiency audit report and service provider/installer requirements.
- Qualifying applicants will be required to meet the following conditions:
Applicants must fully utilise their own contribution before the grant funding can be disbursed for the identified intervention being implemented. - Commit to a set minimum energy and water saving requirement/s, based on the recommendations of the resource efficiency audit or review conducted by the assessor; and
- Only use service providers/installers who meet the GTIP’s requirements; nominated service providers/installers will be screened and confirmation will be provided in writing.
- Eligible applicants (having completed Phase 1) are required to demonstrate economic viability to be considered for funding.
