The World Food Programme (WFP) is implementing resilience-focused projects in Chad to strengthen food security and improve livelihoods across several regions, including Logone Oriental, Sila, Ouaddai, Guera, Kanem, Barh-El-Gazel, Lac, and Wadi Fira.
These initiatives are designed to reduce reliance on humanitarian aid by enhancing agricultural productivity, building sustainable food systems, and improving community resilience to shocks.
Under the PROAGRI project, the focus is on boosting food security by improving the productivity of small-scale producers, including both refugees and host populations. Through better access to cultivated land, seeds, agricultural inputs, and hydro-agricultural infrastructure, communities are given the means to strengthen their food production capacity. Additionally, producer groups and value chains are being developed, while income-generating activities are identified to promote long-term stability.
The FCDO project is centered on making food systems more resilient and improving livelihoods in vulnerable communities. By organizing producers, linking them to agricultural advisory services, and fostering collective innovation, the program ensures farmers are better equipped to adapt to challenges. The strategy includes concentrating efforts on key sites, expanding existing initiatives, and consolidating mature sites with the addition of the SAMS component, which structures and strengthens producer networks.
The BMZ project complements these efforts by building the capacity of households and communities to withstand shocks such as climate change, pandemics, and political or conflict-related crises. By ensuring access to nutritious diets during times of stress, the program reduces dependence on external assistance. At the same time, efforts are directed toward restoring degraded lands, improving food and fodder production, and promoting the adoption of climate-sensitive agricultural practices and water-harvesting technologies.
Together, these projects represent a comprehensive approach to strengthening resilience in Chad, enabling communities to improve food security, restore ecosystems, and build more sustainable livelihoods for the future.
