The Google News Initiative (GNI) is inviting applications for India Training Network’s Fact-Check Academy to support journalists and media educators across India in their fight against misinformation.
Led by DataLEADS, the network has so far trained 39,000 journalists, media educators, fact-checkers and journalism students in more than 10 languages across India, benefiting hundreds of newsrooms and universities. The network’s activities have also led to the launch of many key fact-checking initiatives, helped them become a signatory to the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) and resulted in an exponential surge in the number of fact-checking stories across languages and platforms. The initiative was launched in July 2018 through a partnership between Google, Internews, DataLEADS, with technical and programmatic support from BoomLive and Alt News, First Draft and Storyful.
The Google News Initiative India Training Network is one of the world’s biggest and most impactful fact-checking training networks. Led by DataLEADS, the network aims to support journalists, fact-checkers, media educators and journalism students across India in their fight against misinformation. The network consists of 239 trainers, who are senior journalists, fact checkers and media educators. Our trainers were selected and trained in the train-the-trainer (ToT) model in 2018. In 2022, we expanding this network.
Selected candidates will join a 3-day fully-supported residency train-the-trainer program on the dates indicated below. Preference will be given to those from the new languages and with prior data or science journalism experience.
Criteria
In 2022, Google News Initiative Training Network in India is expanding:
- Launching Fact-Check Academy and inducting 100 new trainers
- 5 new languages: Punjabi, Assamese, Gujarati, Odia and Malayalam to benefit more journalists and media professionals
- Specially designed training on Climate Change Verification and Data Verification for newsrooms and media institutes
