Competition of professional skills for journalists and media in the field of culture “Skillful Verb” named after V.Yu. Matveyev was founded by the State Hermitage, the Vladimir Potanin Charitable Foundation and the Yekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts.
The winners of the competition are specialists in the field of cultural journalism, whose publications or materials can serve as a quality benchmark for colleagues in the media sector, citizen journalists (bloggers) and for cultural organizations.
Objectives
- Strengthening sustainable long-term positive changes – social effect – from the implementation of the Foundation’s charitable programs;
- Development of intersectoral and interregional dialogue on cultural issues;
- Strengthening the role of museums as independent social and cultural institutions, centers of knowledge and innovation, drivers of regional development;
- Updating the agenda of public activities of museums and their inclusion in the multicultural landscape, including during periods of crisis and changing conditions;
- Improvement of modern professional standards in the field of cultural journalism.
How the Competition Works?
- Applicants can represent the following cities:
- Volga cluster: Izhevsk, Yoshkar-Ola, Kazan, Naberezhnye Chelny, Nizhny Novgorod, Orenburg, Penza, Samara, Saratov, Tolyatti, Ulyanovsk
- Ural cluster: Yekaterinburg, Kurgan, Magnitogorsk, Nizhny Tagil, Perm, Surgut, Tyumen, Ufa, Khanty-Mansiysk, Chelyabinsk
- Siberian cluster: Abakan, Barnaul, Kemerovo, Krasnoyarsk, Kyzyl, Novokuznetsk, Novosibirsk, Norilsk, Omsk, Prokopyevsk, Tomsk
- Far Eastern cluster: Angarsk, Artem, Birobidzhan, Blagoveshchensk, Bratsk, Vladivostok, Irkutsk, Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Magadan, Nakhodka, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Ulan-Ude, Ussuriisk, Khabarovsk, Chita, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Yakutinsk
- Each applicant can submit to the competition no more than one application, including no more than three materials. If the applicant submits more materials, only the first three of them will be accepted for consideration.
- The number of winners from one organization / media is not quoted.
- The competition is open to authors of journalistic materials and entries / plots of blogs / video blogs published in print publications, broadcast on television and radio, posted on the Internet in a period including one calendar year before the date of the announcement of the competition, namely from September 23, 2020 to September 22, 2021.
Competition
- The main nominations of the competition:
- “Best blog material” – a post / video about an event in the field of culture on the personal page of the author of the material in social networks or on any online platform, a story in the Internet media or on the media page on social networks. The material should differ in depth, knowledge of the topic, originality and have a wide response in the Internet community (reposts, likes, comments).
- “Best Interview” – an interview with a representative of a cultural institution / creative industry / cultural project, etc. in the form of text, audio or video material. The material should demonstrate the institution’s contribution to the development of the culture of the city / region / country, and the interviewer should demonstrate the ability to correctly pose questions, find acute and important topics, and master the general culture of dialogue.
- “Best article” – analytical or descriptive text in print or online media about any phenomenon, event or person in the field of culture. Cultural announcements are not articles. The material should be distinguished by the author’s point of view, relevance and depth.
- “Best radio program about culture” – a radio show or cycle of programs, a cycle of podcasts devoted to culture / cultural projects. The material should be distinguished by a systematic approach, uniformity of format and the author’s point of view.
- “Best TV Story and TV Program about Culture” – a story or cycle of programs on TV dedicated to culture / cultural projects. Materials should demonstrate relevance and depth, knowledge of the topic, stand out from others with a creative approach, expressiveness and integrity of the coverage of the event.
- “Best Photo Report” – a selection of photos, including those accompanied by a text commentary, in a print or online edition. Materials should demonstrate the expressiveness and integrity of the coverage of the event, efficiency and creative approach to solving the problem posed by the editorial board.
- Honorary nomination of the competition (awarded for materials submitted to the main nominations of the competition):
- Grand Prix – for the most striking materials, an extraordinary and versatile approach to coverage of events in the field of culture. The winner in the honorary nomination “Grand Prix” is determined from among the winners in the main nominations.
Possibilities
- Thanks to the competition, participants will expand contacts in the interregional professional community and get acquainted with the work of colleagues who meet high professional standards. Journalists will gain a more systematic view of cultural events in their own and nearby regions. Cultural institutions in the regions will acquire new information partners. The satellites of the State Hermitage will strengthen their status as museum centers within the region, as well as act as platforms for intersectoral interregional dialogue on cultural issues.
- The winners of the competition, regardless of the nomination, receive the right to undergo training at specialized educational courses and / or purchase professional equipment for the development of journalistic skills.
Eligibility Criteria
The competition is open to authors of journalistic and / or information materials published in print or electronic publications, broadcast on television or radio, posted on the Internet in the format of records / posts / stories / blogs / video blogs / photo reports not earlier than one calendar year before the date of the announcement competition:
- full-time and hired employees of organizations in the spheres of culture, education, non-profit sector, mass media located in the territory of the Russian Federation and registered in accordance with the current legislation;
- independent Russian bloggers, specialists in the field of journalism, museums and other related fields.

- knowledge of trends and best practices in the field of journalism and culture.
- Material:
- significance for the development of culture and cultural institutions in the regions;
- argumentation and objectivity;
- originality of plots and ways of presentation;
- expressiveness, accuracy and clarity of language and style of presentation.
