Applications are open for “Support to Media in Jordan” to help Jordan’s efforts in advancing the Jordanian media to further increase its freedom, independence and professionalism.
During the first phase of the project, UNESCO developed a comprehensive study of the Jordanian media landscape on the basis of UNESCO’s Media Development Indicators (MDI). In the second phase of the project, UNESCO has been implementing activities based on the MDI report recommendations.
The project is now in Phase Two, which addresses the findings as well as recommendations of the above-mentioned study in the following areas:
- Improvement of legal framework, closer in line with international standards;
- Entry level journalism education;
- Systematic quality training for media professionals;
- Independent self-regulatory mechanism;
- Media and information literacy (MIL);
- Diversity and pluralism in the media.
This call for expression of interest will allow UNESCO to select and assist media outlets that offer a strong commitment to improve their capacities and skills in:
- Implementing innovative solutions within the media outlet, including and not limited to:
- Adapt the media to the technical changes brought about by the Internet and digitalization;
- Support convergence and integration of traditional news media and new communications,
- Develop innovative application;
- Foster data journalism, cross media story telling;
- Managerial innovation;
- Ameliorating the image of women through media production, by developing a project that will be:
- Gender-responsive (i.e. it sees how the differentials are significant, in how the project is designed); or
- Gender-transformative (i.e. it is a gender-specific project in that it aims to change gender inequalities).
Eligibility Criteria
- Registered entity in Jordan that has a valid license to operate in Jordan (please provide a copy of the license);
Selection Criteria
- The media encourages and facilitate local communities to express themselves and provide them with access that is relevant to their day-to-day lives;
- The media reaches out to specific social and/or age groups;
- The media has a clear plans to improve diversity and pluralism in the media landscape, by improving their capacities on gender or innovation;
- The media provide all the information requested in this call, clearly and pertinently;
- The proposal submitted by the media directly contributes to addressee Outcome 3 and Outcome 7 of the “Support to Media in Jordan” project.
