Deadline: 15-Nov-2025
The International Journalists’ Programmes is inviting applications for its German-Northern European Programme to support early and mid-career journalists between Germany and more than 40 other countries and regions.
The purpose of these exchanges is to allow participants to experience their host countries from a correspondent’s perspective, exchange knowledge and network within their field.
Journalists from all countries, who are granted the German-Northern European bursary, receive a deeper and more detailed insight into the political landscape, the economy, and everyday life in the host country. Participants from the Northern countries meet opinion leaders and decision makers in Germany, the largest country in the European Union.
The scholarship programme begins with a three-day introduction conference in spring 2026, held either in one of the Nordic capitals or in Berlin. Following the conference, selected journalists embark on a six- to eight-week stay at their assigned host organizations. These organizations are chosen by IJP, taking into account each participant’s interests, qualifications, and preferences. The programme concludes with a final conference, which all fellows are required to attend.
Each participant will receive a stipend of 3,800 Euro to help cover travel, accommodation, and personal expenses during their stay in Germany. Any additional costs must be borne by the participant. Compensation for work completed during the exchange is subject to the discretion of the host organization and cannot be guaranteed.
The programme is open to journalists aged between 18 and 45 from the Nordic countries who work in print, radio, or television media, whether as employees or freelancers. While fluency in German is not a requirement, applicants must have at least a workable knowledge of English.
Participants are expected to submit a three-page report summarizing their experiences and including all journalistic contributions produced during their stay. These reports, along with the published work, will be compiled as part of the final documentation. After the completion of the exchange, fellows are encouraged to remain connected through the IJP alumni network, fostering long-term collaboration and professional ties.
Applicants must submit a CV with a photograph, a letter of recommendation from an editor, four samples of written work—or a list of contributions for TV and radio journalists—and indicate their preferred host media outlets and regions within Germany. A selection committee will finalize the list of successful candidates by 1 December 2025.
The application deadline is 15 November 2025.
