Deadline: 16-Oct-2025
Applications are now open for the Environmental Journalism Programme, which supports cross-border teams of professional journalists and media outlets in investigating environmental issues linked to European affairs. The programme focuses on uncovering illegal, unreported, and unregulated harm to nature that involves Europe, both within and beyond its borders.
This initiative encourages collaborative investigations across countries, but it can also support comparative research into environmental policies and problems between different regions or cities. Investigations must be relevant to Europe and aim to be published in at least two professional outlets from different countries, with one outlet based in Europe.
The total grant fund is €1,600,000, with approximately €400,000 allocated per funding round. Grants can cover journalists’ working time and direct investigation costs such as travel, accommodation, translation, FOI requests, and access to paywalled data. Costs for tools like datasets or satellite images are also eligible, as are training and post-production expenses up to €1,000. However, overheads, hardware, food, and per diems are not covered.
To be eligible, teams must include at least two journalists or media outlets legally residing or registered in at least two different countries. Applicants must be professional journalists or established media companies and need to provide personal references and links to previous work. The story must be published in at least two countries, in any journalistic format such as print, online, radio, television, photo-reportage, podcast, or books.
Proposals are assessed on the relevance and novelty of the environmental topic, investigative strength, feasibility, potential public impact, and the team’s experience. The jury also values strong cross-border collaboration and diverse team composition. Final selections aim to reflect a range of regions, topics, media types, and approaches.
