Deadline: 19-Sep-2025
The U.S. Embassy in Botswana is pleased to announce the competition for the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program for the 2026-27 academic year.
The Embassy encourages interested candidates to submit proposals relating to curriculum development or research work that addresses capacitation within the following topics: Countering misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation, Economic ties and fair trade to promote mutual prosperity, Cooperation in energy, science, technology, cybersecurity, or artificial intelligence, and People-to-people ties through sports and the arts including film and music.
The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program facilitates research projects at U.S. universities or research facilities. There are two grant types. Research Grants are for 3 to 9 months and are offered for African university faculty or research institute professionals to conduct research in any academic discipline within the focus areas. Applicants must hold a doctorate or equivalent terminal degree and preference will be given to individuals who have at least three years of university teaching experience and a productive scholarly record. Program and Curriculum Development Grants are for 3 to 5 months and are offered for African university faculty or administrators to conduct research in a selected academic discipline matching the focus areas. Proposals should be linked to professional duties and demonstrate how the scholar will use the knowledge gained to develop new courses, curricula, or other academic programs at their home institution. These grants are designed for university faculty or administrators with less experience and a doctorate degree is not required, but applicants must hold a minimum of a master’s or equivalent graduate degree.
Both grant categories require that projects begin no earlier than August 2026 and no later than March 2027. To be eligible, applicants must be citizens of Botswana and affiliated with an educational or research institution. Applicants cannot have received a Fulbright grant for study, teaching, or research in the U.S. within the last five years, and preference is given to those with limited or no prior experience in the United States.
Grant benefits include round-trip air travel for the grantee only, an excess baggage allowance, health insurance for the grantee only, a monthly stipend, and a professional allowance for books, conferences, and seminars. Laboratory fees are not part of the standard benefits package but are paid on a case-by-case basis if funding is available. To apply, candidates must complete an online application and upload all supporting documents by the deadline of Friday, September 19, 2025. Required documents include a detailed statement of the research proposal and methodology, a detailed curriculum vitae, and three letters of reference. Letters of invitation from U.S. university faculty, if available, should also be included. Plagiarism is strictly prohibited and will result in disqualification.
