Deadline: 19-Sep-2025
The Fritt Ord Foundation is inviting applications for its Norwegian Journalism Grant Programme to help enable projects that can be important in the social debate and for as many citizens as possible.
The Norwegian Journalism call is completely open in terms of topics. Journalists, editors and editorial teams are free to design their application projects in terms of topic selection and content. Fritt Ord supports journalism projects that target the general public, can use any publishing platform, and can be multimedia.
They want to support the specific work on content to be published to the greatest extent possible, and to a lesser extent support operating costs, technical development projects, internal skills development and the purchase of equipment.
The Fritt Ord Foundation allocates up to 25 million kroner annually to support Norwegian journalism. This funding is provided through a specific call for applications titled “Norwegian journalism.
All free, editor-controlled publications with Norwegian media users as their target audience can apply. Applicants can be editorial offices or individuals, but all support must be used by named individuals. The organization is open to new forms of collaboration between multiple editorial offices or journalistic communities, and freelancers with a publishing agreement are especially welcome as applicants.
Applicants must submit a project outline of 3-5 pages that is as specific as possible. The outline should include a progress plan, a description of the content, and an overview of project staff with a five-line CV for each. An appendix is also required, containing information on other funding sources, personal contributions, and the total project budget. Freelancers must attach a brief confirmation of their publishing agreement and fee level from the editorial office that will publish the project. A grant is intended as an addition to the fee, and receiving funds cannot be used to lower the fee level. Applications should be marked “Norwegian journalism” in the title field.
