The HumAngle Foundation is seeking applications for its Strengthening Community Journalism and Human Rights Advocacy in Northern Nigeria (SCOJA) Fellowship Programme to promote accountability for human rights violations in rural contexts and locally-led solutions to various gaps in Northern Nigeria.
The Fellowship will cover a wide range of topics, including human rights and advocacy, digital safety and physical security for journalists and activists, techniques for reporting on SGBV, accountability reporting and investigative journalism, climate change reporting and advocacy, and conflict-sensitive reporting. Participants will also learn about collaborating with CBOs, government representatives, and development partners, solutions reporting, inclusive storytelling, data-driven journalism and civic engagement, approaches to mobilising and inspiring action, countering misinformation and disinformation in various contexts, as well as press freedom and navigating legal challenges.
Participants in the Fellowship will receive mentorship throughout the program, support in developing reports and advocacy activities, skills acquisition in reporting, advocacy, fact-checking, and security training, as well as opportunities for networking and peer-to-peer learning. Fellows will also receive a stipend for the duration of the program.
Fellows are expected to attend the three-day training in any of the focal states, submit monthly activity reports for six months, produce at least three reports and one major advocacy initiative, participate in surveys and virtual sessions, and conduct step-down training for colleagues in their organizations.
This Fellowship targets community journalists and advocates in Benue, Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau, Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Kaduna, and Kano states. The program will include a three-day training held in Kaduna, Plateau, and Borno, followed by a six-month post-training period for fellows to produce stories and engage in advocacy activities.
Ideal candidates are journalists and advocates focused on specific communities, towns, or states, residing in any of the target states, and committed to fostering community-led change and stakeholder engagement. Women are particularly encouraged to apply.
Deadline for applications is October 10, 2025.
