Deadline: 25-Aug-2025
Are you a Dutch-speaking journalist with a strong interest in academic research? The Journalist-in-Residence Fellowship offers a chance to work full-time for five months on a major journalistic project within an inspiring and interdisciplinary academic environment. This opportunity is available twice a year and is hosted by the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) in partnership with Fonds Bijzondere Journalistieke Projecten (Fonds BJP).
The fellowship allows journalists to dedicate themselves entirely to projects like a non-fiction book, article series, podcast, documentary, or multimedia production that will result in one or more Dutch-language publications. The residency takes place in Amsterdam and provides both the quiet needed for deep work and the intellectual stimulation of a vibrant academic community.
Fellows are given access to a private office, weekly seminars, and the full support of NIAS’s academic resources. They become part of a diverse and international community, contributing their storytelling methods while gaining insight from the research of other fellows. This exchange enriches both journalistic and academic practices.
The fellowship encourages the production of in-depth journalism, while the journalist’s perspective opens new research possibilities for others at NIAS. Fellows enjoy benefits such as a personal office, shared lunches four days a week, library access, seminars, social events, and a strong international network.
Each fellow receives a monthly stipend of €3,200. To be eligible, applicants must be Dutch-speaking journalists—freelancers or employed—who have already made progress on a substantial project and wish to further develop it in an academic setting. NIAS hosts around fifty fellows annually, including scholars, writers, journalists, and artists from around the world.
Applications are welcome from journalists working on investigative series, longform pieces, podcasts, documentaries, visual storytelling, and similar formats. The project must be journalistic in nature and meet Fonds BJP’s requirements. Applicants must participate actively in institute life, including attending weekly seminars in English and being present on site at least four days a week. Though NIAS operates in English, the final work must be published in Dutch.
Applications must be submitted in Dutch through Fonds BJP. The Fonds evaluates all submissions and nominates one candidate to NIAS, which then officially awards the fellowship.
