Nominations are open for Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) Environmental Photographer of the Year 2019 to promote and reward excellence in international environmental photography, and to enhance the understanding of the causes, consequences of and solutions to climate change and social inequality.
The competition encourages entries that are contemporary, creative, resonant, challenging, original and beautiful, but most of all, images that will inspire people around the world to start taking care of their environment.
Category and Prizes
- Environmental Photographer of the Year 2019
- Celebrating powerful storytelling, the Environmental Photographer of the Year is awarded to a single image which triggers debate, inspires action and improves understanding of the causes, impacts and solutions to environmental change and social inequality.
- The winning photographer will receive a £2,000 cash prize, personalised certificate and spread and interview in one issue of CIWEM’s The Environment Magazine.
- Young Environmental Photographer of the Year 2019 (under 21)
- This category showcases the best in environmental photography through the lens of young photographers aged 21 or under, inspiring people around the world to protect and conserve their natural environment.
- The winning photographer will receive brand new camera equipment, personalised certificate and an interview in CIWEM’s The Environment Magazine.
- Changing Environments Prize
- Chronicling environmental change and the resilience of the individuals and communities facing adversity including extreme weather events, environmental destruction, energy security and conservation of their natural resources.
- The winning photographer will receive a £500 cash prize, personalised certificate and coverage in CIWEM’s The Environment Magazine.
- Sustainable Cities Prize
- Focusing on their built environments and the communities and animals that inhabit them, including environmental solutions from design, materials and structures, smart and resilient cities, transport, waste and the connections between nature, society and infrastructure in their urban environments.
- The winning photographer will receive a £500 cash prize, personalised certificate and coverage in CIWEM’s The Environment Magazine.
- Climate Action and Energy Prize
- Revealing human connection to the natural world and their actions to preserve it, this category explores sustainable environmental and economic development, the natural and social value of the environment, affordable clean energy and innovative adaption and mitigation approaches to environmental change.
- The winning photographer will receive a £500 cash prize, personalised certificate and coverage in CIWEM’s The Environment Magazine.
- Water, Equality and Security Prize
- Examining the intricate relationships between access to clean water and sanitation, gender equality and security this category explores their ever-increasing demand for water and the role of gender equality in every aspect of water management from water scarcity to flooding.
- The winning photographer will receive a £500 cash prize, personalised certificate and coverage in CIWEM’s The Environment Magazine.
Eligibility Criteria
- The Environmental Photographer of the Year 2019 is now open for entries to all professional and amateur, national and international photographers of all ages.
- Anyone born on or before 30th June 1998 can enter this category.
- For entrants under 18 parental permission must be received from the parent or guardian of the photographer.
- Proof of age may be required once the submission has been made.
