Deadline: 15-Jul-2025
The Poetry Foundation’s General Operating Support Program provides unrestricted funding to nonprofit organizations focused on poetry. This includes poetry organizations, presses, publications, and select literary arts service and membership organizations across the U.S. and its territories.
The goal of this program is to give organizations the flexibility to concentrate on their core missions while sustaining their daily operations. The funding can be used for various operational needs such as staff salaries, rent, utilities, technology, administrative costs, marketing, fundraising, technical support, and the hiring of new staff positions.
Grants range from $10,000 to $75,000 and are awarded for a 12-month period. Organizations applying must have a minimum annual operating budget of $20,000, which may include in-kind revenue.
Eligible applicants include nonprofit poetry organizations and literary arts service or membership organizations that place poetry at the center of their mission. The program also welcomes applications from literary arts groups serving historically underrepresented poets and writers.
Nonprofit poetry presses and publications are eligible as well. The Poetry Foundation will also consider presses and publications that focus on publishing underrepresented poets or content that is at least 50% poetry.
Applications must come from U.S.-based organizations or those in U.S. territories. Nonprofits without 501(c)(3) status may apply using a fiscal sponsor that holds this designation.
The Foundation does not fund individuals, for-profit entities, universities, colleges, K–12 schools, or organizations that primarily serve youth under high school age or focus on literacy. Religious organizations, capital campaigns, endowments, and commercial ventures are also ineligible for support.
