The Alan Hagman Photojournalism Grant Program is offered annually to facilitate projects ranging from human rights to environmental issues.
Recipients of these grants and fellowships are responsible for all taxes and expenses, and a completed IRS form will be required upon acceptance. The Michel du Cille Fellowship provides six thousand dollars ($6,000) upon award, an additional six thousand dollars ($6,000) upon demonstration of significant progress, and three thousand dollars ($3,000) upon submission of at least thirty (30) digital images and any videos within eighteen (18) months.
The Alan Hagman Grant provides five thousand dollars ($5,000) upon award and one thousand dollars ($1,000) upon submission of at least twenty-five (25) digital images and any videos within eighteen (18) months. The Bob & Millie Lynn Grant provides four thousand dollars ($4,000) upon award and one thousand dollars ($1,000) upon submission of at least twenty-five (25) digital images and any videos within eighteen (18) months.
Recipients are expected to submit a minimum of thirty high-resolution images and any videos with comprehensive captions and information from the project upon its conclusion. If the project includes video, a high-resolution copy must be submitted. Grantees are encouraged to adhere to their project timeline, communicate progress monthly, and seek advice from NPPF coordinators as needed. A written document outlining work on the grant must be submitted within twelve to eighteen months of receiving the grant.
NPPF and respective grantors must be credited in all publications or public communications related to the project, unless otherwise indicated. Application information and proposals are subject to verification by the NPPF, whose decisions are final. NPPF reserves the right to disqualify or rescind grants if ethical standards are violated or submissions fail to meet professional standards.
Ethically, recipients must maintain the highest professional, ethical, and personal standards. Images must not be digitally manipulated beyond accepted professional standards. NPPF reserves the right to disqualify entries with manipulated or staged images and may rescind awards if violations occur.
Eligibility for the Alan Hagman Grant and Michel du Cille Fellowship is limited to professional photojournalists legally residing in Puerto Rico, the United States, or United States Minor Outlying Islands. Staff photographers must obtain written permission from their employer before proceeding with a project.
Recipients retain copyright and ownership of their work, with any income generated remaining with the recipient. However, NPPF is granted rights to use the recipient’s name, likeness, biographical information, and project materials for educational, promotional, and fundraising purposes. This license is non-exclusive, perpetual, and royalty-free.
Applicants for the Alan Hagman Grant must submit personal information, a concise bio, CV with references, project title, project description (under 2,500 characters), project proposal (under 4,000 characters), and a body of work consisting of up to 24 images or 2–3 videos of less than 10 minutes each. Digital images should be JPG format, 3,000 pixels on the long side, with IPTC fields including caption (excluding photographer name), story description, city/state, date, creator/photographer, and copyright information.
