Thomson Reuters Foundation and the Asian Development Bank will conduct five-day online training for two groups of journalists from Tajikistan from March 29 to April 2 and from April 5 to 9. The programs presented in Russian will provide a unique opportunity to gain practical skills and knowledge from experienced Reuters journalists, environmental specialists, and specialists in the field of climate change. Particular attention will be paid to the creation of effective, accurate, and timely materials for distribution to the media of which these journalists represent.
Coverage of climate change can be challenging – understanding the meanings of many of the abbreviations used, scientific information and how climate change affects everything from agriculture to energy and business.
This program helps journalists identify, research and write clear, concise and accurate stories about climate change, its impact on the environment and the lives of ordinary people, and what can be done to help them adapt. The focus is on delivering information that must remain relevant to both policymakers and a wider audience.
The program helps journalists in such matters as:
- Explaining the essence of climate change in simple terms;
- An explanation of its impact on the lives of ordinary people;
- Understanding social and economic consequences;
- Handling scientific data and forecasts;
- Drawing the audience’s attention to the scale of events projected in the coming decades;
- Adaptation of Tajikistan and developing countries of Asia to climate change and attempts to mitigate them;
- The impact of climate change on issues such as water resources, food security, infrastructure and ecosystem health in Tajikistan.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be journalists working in Tajikistan. If they are not full-time employees, then they must have significant experience as a freelancer, including recent publications in client media.
- Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to a journalistic career in their home country, have at least two years of professional experience, and a good level of oral and written Russian.
