Thomson Reuters Foundation is currently inviting journalists from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine to apply for participation in the intensive 12-week online training program “ COVID-19 HUB ”.
The main goal of the program is to provide theoretical knowledge and improve the practical skills of journalists in comprehensive coverage of the outbreak of coronavirus infection and the effects of the pandemic.
The training course will focus on the practical application of acquired knowledge, as well as detailed work on errors during the collection of information, writing and design of the material. Participants will meet once a week for a 90-minute online workshop or meeting with experts, and once every two weeks for a 90-minute online workshop with a mentor in groups of 5 participants. All participants in the program are expected to write 2-3 materials during the course with the support of mentors.
The project program will include such modules:
- How to cover the crisis in the editorial plan (including the types of materials, the needs of the audience, the search for new topics and formats to cover a protracted topic)
- Work with information sources (including reliable scientific resources, work with databases, medical research, specialized interviews)
- Best and worst practices for visualizing pandemic stories and their consequences on digital platforms
- Work with victims, patients, medical workers
- Explore new online tools and platforms
- Recommendations for finding reliable information and identifying fake news
- Ethics and standards for working with coronavirus
- Physical and emotional safety for journalists: how to protect yourself.
- Coverage of the economic and political aspects of the crisis
The training course is designed for journalists with work experience of 2 years or more. Program dates from July 7 to September 25, 2020 .
The maximum number of program participants is 20 people. Participants must attend classes for 12 weeks.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be citizens and be based in one of the following countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine;
- Work as a state journalist or collaborate as a freelancer with local media in their respective countries;
- Have more than two years of professional experience in journalism and have a good level of spoken and written Russian for participating in the program. The main working language of the program is Russian, in rare cases, the help of mentors and coordinators can be provided in English. Publications of materials may be in the language of publications in which selected participants work;
- Be prepared to commit to participate in the program in full all 12 weeks;
- During the 12-week program to create up to three journalistic materials;
- Be a supporter of impartial, accurate and independent journalism.
