The Thomson Reuters Foundation (TRF) training program in partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) offers journalists the opportunity to expand their professional knowledge and skills in reporting on social inclusion as countries emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic and in response to the climate emergency and a sharp rise in the cost of living worldwide.
The training course explores key journalistic skills, search engine optimization, and online security for journalists, based on state-of-the-art developments and best practices for reporting and writing.

- Identify the main issues and challenges that exacerbate social inequality and financial exclusion, and understand the role these factors play in the lives of vulnerable populations in a post-pandemic world amid soaring cost of living and climate emergency;
- More effectively, accurately and ethically to cover topics related to social inclusion, exploring different points of view and interpretation of a particular story;
- Develop skills in writing balanced material, searching for reliable sources online, as well as interviewing skills on sensitive topics and topics related to vulnerable and / or socially excluded groups of the population;
- Learn to focus on key themes, including through a solution journalism approach to social inclusion issues;
- Learn about effective ways to structure content, including writing leads, a paragraph summarizing the essence of the problem, and several drafts for news and feature articles;
- Learn how to use extensive search engine optimization (SEO) capabilities when writing material and make the material more visible to the audience;
- Manage your online safety with tools and tips to protect your personal data and privacy.
Experienced Thomson Reuters Foundation mentors will help attendees further develop their writing skills in a compelling yet accurate story, as well as explore how to cover social inclusion issues as their country emerges from the pandemic.
Course Logistics
- The intensive program takes place online for five consecutive days of four hours of study, observation and discussion per day. The program includes classes in a group under the guidance of a leading mentor and co-mentor. Classes combine individual work and group work. Participants will also meet social inclusion experts. On the last day of the course, the participants make a presentation of the idea of the material based on the knowledge gained, and the TRF mentors give feedback.
- This training course is offered for two groups of journalists with the opportunity to participate from 5 to 9 September 2022 and from 12 to 16 September 2022. Indicate your preferences for the dates of study in the questionnaire when applying for participation in the program.
- Upon successful completion of the training course, participants will receive a certificate from TRF and ADB.
- Upon completion of the training course, individual participants will be given the opportunity to continue working with a mentor and receive the support of TRF mentors who will help them complete the work on the stated material with subsequent publication in the stated time frame.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants for the program must be journalists who are citizens and work in Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan or Uzbekistan. Successful applicants must be able to demonstrate their intention to pursue a career as a journalist in any of these countries, at least two years of professional experience, and a good level of Russian language proficiency in both spoken and written form.
- If the candidate is not a full-time employee, they must demonstrate significant freelance experience, including recent postings on their clients’ platforms.
- Applicants must have reliable internet access that allows them to stay online for hours on end. Access to a computer is also required to participate in the training course.
