The Souter Charitable Trust is currently accepting applications for funding from UK-registered charities that are working to relieve human suffering in all its forms. The Trust supports a wide range of humanitarian projects both within the United Kingdom and internationally. While there is a particular interest in projects that align with a Christian ethos, this is not an exclusive requirement. Charities of all faiths—or none—may be considered if their work reflects compassion, dignity, and tangible impact on communities in need.
The primary goal of the Trust is to support initiatives that have a direct and meaningful effect on human wellbeing. This includes a broad spectrum of causes such as healthcare access, poverty alleviation, humanitarian aid, and social support services. Projects may be based in the UK or abroad, but all applicants must be UK-registered charities. Due to legal and regulatory restrictions, the Trust cannot provide direct funding to overseas organizations that are not based in the UK, as it cannot perform the necessary due diligence required under UK law.
In terms of funding, there is no specified minimum or maximum amount that an organization can request. However, the majority of grants awarded are in the range of £1,000 to £3,000. These are typically one-off donations intended to support specific programs or short-term needs. The Trust may also fund gap year or short-term projects, provided these initiatives are planned to run for at least one full calendar year. This approach ensures that even smaller, time-limited efforts have a measurable and sustained impact.
It is important to note that the Souter Charitable Trust does not offer funding for capital building projects or renovation work. Likewise, applications for personal needs, such as funding for individual education, medical expenses, or personal development, are not eligible. The Trust aims to support charitable organizations that serve communities collectively, rather than individuals on a case-by-case basis.
All grant applications are reviewed monthly by the Board of Trustees. Applicants can expect to receive an acknowledgment after submission, regardless of whether their application is ultimately successful. This commitment to transparency and communication ensures that charities are not left in uncertainty about the status of their proposals.
For organizations that have previously applied and either received or were declined a grant, the Trust permits reapplication. However, this is only allowed after a full calendar year has passed since the previous application. This policy ensures fair consideration and adequate spacing between funding requests.
Finally, it’s important to understand that all grants are awarded entirely at the discretion of the Trustees. Their decisions are final and are made based on a combination of project merit, organizational capacity, alignment with the Trust’s mission, and available funds at the time of review.
The Souter Charitable Trust remains a vital source of support for UK charities that are committed to alleviating suffering and making a positive, lasting difference in the lives of vulnerable individuals and communities.
