Deadline: 15-Oct-2025
The KNAW is seeking applications for its Dobberke Grant to provide Comparative Psychology in Netherlands.
The grant is awarded annually and consists of a sum between 2,000 EUR and 6,000 EUR. The activities for which a grant may be applied for must primarily concern research on animal behavior, which includes fields such as behavioral biology and psychology. The grant is not intended for research that is entirely neurobiological or physiological, or that focuses predominantly on humans.
Applications can be submitted by PhD candidates and researchers who work at or are affiliated with a university or research institute in the Netherlands. Non-graduates and master’s students are not eligible for funding. The grant can be used to cover research costs, costs of study trips to foreign research groups, and organization costs for scientific meetings or knowledge dissemination. Funding is not intended for items considered to be standard equipment of an institute, the applicant’s regular work program, salaries, courses, dissertations, open-access fees, or conference presentations or attendance. The grant is intended solely for the applicant’s project and cannot be used to cover costs already incurred in ongoing research.
Applications must be submitted by email using the application form provided by the KNAW and must include the requested attachments. An application is considered submitted when the applicant receives a confirmation of receipt from the KNAW. The application form and attachments must be sent before the set closing date. Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered. Members of the KNAW Board and the Board of the Dr. J.L. Dobberke Foundation are not permitted to submit or co-submit applications.
When assessing applications, the board considers the scientific quality of the proposal, its suitability regarding the aim to fund research in animal behavior, the reason for applying, the applicant’s CV, and the research project’s budget.
Applicants will be notified of the decision within two months after the submission deadline. If a grant is awarded, the grant conditions in the attachment to the guidelines apply. The awarded grant amount is based on the budget specified in the application. The recipient should spend the grant during the period specified in the grant letter. A maximum of one change request can be submitted during the grant activities if there are valid reasons for deviating from the approved budget or spending period. The recipient can request 100 percent of the awarded grant as an advance, which is transferred to the bank account of the affiliated institution in the Netherlands. This request cannot be made earlier than one month before the start of the grant activities.
Within three months after the grant activities have ended, the recipient must submit a final accountability report to the KNAW via email. The final accountability includes a report on the activities and a financial account. The KNAW determines the final grant amount based on this accountability report. If the final accountability is not submitted on time, the grant may be withdrawn and any advance payment may be reclaimed. The grant can also be reclaimed up to five years after determination if the KNAW believes that scientific standards have been violated. The grant recipient must acknowledge the Dobberke Grant in all publicity and publications resulting from the funded activities. The KNAW will announce the grant recipients on its website, including their name, research institution, and a summary of the grant activities. If the recipient does not agree to this publication, they must inform the KNAW within one week of receiving the grant letter. The deadline for application is 15 October 2025.
