Deadline: 01-Oct-2025
The Getty Library Research Grants provide partial, short-term support for researchers who need access to the Getty Library’s specialized collections. These grants are open to scholars of all nationalities and academic levels, provided they live more than 80 miles from the Getty Center and have a clear need to consult the library’s holdings.
In addition to the general open call, there are focused grants available. These include the Whitney and Lee Kaplan Grant for research in African American visual culture, the Anne Willan and Mark Cherniavsky Grant for projects in culinary history and food presentation, and the Conservation Collection Grant for research in cultural heritage preservation. There is also a category of awards specifically for undergraduate students studying disciplines such as art history, architecture, or studio art who have not yet advanced to graduate-level education.
The grants offer varying levels of support based on geographic location. Researchers within California (but over 80 miles from the Getty) receive $1,500, those from North America receive $3,000, and international researchers receive $4,500. The funded research period can take place anytime from February 2 to December 18, 2026, and must span between 5 days and 8 weeks.
Eligible projects must focus on specific items from the Getty Library’s collections, and applications should demonstrate a strong justification for needing access to physical materials, especially if digital versions already exist. Projects based solely on Getty Museum collections are not eligible.
Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation for their application to be considered complete. Anyone who has received a Getty Library Research Grant within the past four years is not eligible to apply.
