Deadline: 02-Feb-2026
Leukaemia UK is inviting applications for its John Goldman Fellowship Programme, offering up to £200,000 to support early career researchers in developing innovative leukaemia research projects and progressing toward independent research leadership.
Overview
The John Goldman Fellowship Programme, funded by Leukaemia UK, supports talented early career researchers who demonstrate scientific excellence, originality, and a clear ambition to translate research advances into clinical impact. The fellowship is designed to help researchers develop as independent investigators within a supportive research environment.
The programme prioritises projects that combine innovative ideas with realistic and well-structured delivery plans, while also demonstrating strong potential for long-term research independence.
Funding Details
Successful applicants may receive up to £200,000 for a period of 18 months to two years.
Funding may be used to support the fellow’s salary and direct project-related costs. However, the fellowship does not cover equipment purchases, PhD stipends or fees, or indirect costs such as institutional overheads.
While matched or additional funding is not required, proposals that demonstrate the ability to leverage complementary funding sources may be viewed favourably.
Researcher Eligibility
The fellowship is open to UK-based research scientists and clinician-scientists, with no age restrictions.
Applicants may be clinically qualified or non-clinical researchers, provided they can demonstrate strong potential to become future leaders in leukaemia research. A solid publication record is expected, although it does not need to be exceptional at this career stage.
The programme is particularly suited to postdoctoral researchers or clinical scientists on a clear pathway toward independence and principal investigator status, as well as newly appointed lecturers who are establishing their own research groups within two years of their first permanent academic position.
Priority may be given to applicants seeking personal salary support, rather than those requesting funding primarily to employ additional laboratory staff.
Application and Review Process
Applications must be submitted through the Leukaemia UK Funding Management System and will first undergo an administrative and eligibility screening to ensure compliance with scope, page limits, and submission requirements.
Eligible applications will then be assessed by the John Goldman Fellowship Expert Review Panel, supported by external expert reviewers and lay members of the Patient Experience Advisory Panel.
Shortlisted candidates may be invited to attend an interview at Leukaemia UK’s London offices, which will include a presentation followed by questions from the review panel.
Timeline and Notification
The application deadline is midday on 02 February 2026.
All applicants will be notified of the outcome by 31 July 2026. Feedback may be provided at the discretion of Leukaemia UK, though it is not guaranteed.
Conclusion
The John Goldman Fellowship Programme offers a significant opportunity for early career researchers to strengthen their independence, advance innovative leukaemia research, and build a strong foundation for future leadership in the field.
