The Kellogg Institute for International Studies is inviting applications for its Postdoctoral Visiting Fellowships, designed for early-career scholars whose research focuses on global democracy. These fellowships are open to newly awarded PhDs who are seeking to advance their academic work in an intellectually stimulating environment.
Postdoctoral Fellows join a vibrant cohort at the Kellogg Institute, where they are given dedicated time, resources, and opportunities to develop their research, grow professionally, and collaborate with accomplished faculty and peers from around the world.
The fellowship includes a competitive stipend, round-trip travel expenses, research funding, and medical insurance. It typically runs for one academic year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year based on interest and performance.
Fellows are required to be in residence for the duration of the fellowship. Extended absences are discouraged and must be approved by the Director. During their time at Kellogg, fellows are expected to present their research, actively participate in seminars and events, and contribute to the academic life of the Institute.
The Institute also expects fellows to publish research completed during their stay, with appropriate acknowledgment of Kellogg Institute support.
Applicants must have earned a PhD within three years of the fellowship start date and conduct international research related to global democracy. The fellowship is open to scholars from any country, though graduates of the University of Notre Dame PhD programs are not eligible.
While the most competitive applicants typically hold a PhD in the social sciences, exceptional candidates from other disciplines may also be considered. Non-U.S. citizens must have strong English proficiency, a valid passport, and be able to obtain a J-1 visa.
Applicants should also be aware of the U.S. immigration rule that requires a 24-month stay outside the U.S. after a J-1 Professor or Research Scholar program, unless immediately transitioning into another qualifying appointment.
The application requires a cover letter indicating interest and preferred dates, a curriculum vitae, a detailed research project statement (6–10 pages), a short abstract (150 words), a brief bio (200–300 words), and three confidential letters of recommendation submitted via Interfolio by October 7. Applicants must also submit the Visiting Fellowship Application Form and the Institutional Required Information Form through the online system.
