Deadline: 03-Dec-2025
The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is inviting applications for its Short-Term Scholarship to support qualified students, academics, and researchers in Armenian Studies to participate in activities related to their field of research.
The grant amount is based on proposals received, with a maximum of 5,000 Euros in this category of scholarship. Note that “Armenian Studies” is understood in a broad sense and is not confined to “Area Studies”. It includes politics, sociology, cultural studies, archaeology, history and other disciplines within the social sciences and humanities.
Candidates wishing to apply must be either a Master or PhD student or a researcher in the field of Armenian Studies who seeks to conduct field research, pursue small research projects, or engage in relevant activities such as international conference attendance or summer school participation. The maximum duration of stay or length of project is three months, and while there is no age limit, preference is given to younger scholars.
Applications are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the academic relevance of the proposed activity, its relationship to the candidate’s expertise, the candidate’s merit, the quality of the proposal, the international importance of the activity, and the strength of reference letters.
Applicants are required to submit a complete set of documents, including identification, attested university certificates, curriculum vitae, letters of support or references, and depending on the type of activity, a paper abstract and acceptance letter for conferences, or a detailed research proposal with a timeline, methodology, and host institution letter for research trips. In all cases, a proposed budget must be included.
Applications can be submitted online from 23 January until 3 December 2025 (23h59, Lisbon time) in English, French, Armenian, or Portuguese. Completed applications received until the last day of each month will be evaluated during the first ten days of the following month, with decisions communicated within six weeks of submission. Applicants may receive a maximum of two grants, although not within the same calendar year. Exceptions may be made after a reasonable period of time with prior permission from the Foundation. If participation is not possible for any reason, including visa issues, the funds must be returned to the Foundation.
