The Fernand Braudel Senior Fellowships offer established academics with international reputations a chance to pursue independent research at the European University Institute (EUI). The fellowship is hosted in one of EUI’s four departments, where fellows can engage with academic activities like seminars, workshops, and colloquia.
During their stay, fellows are encouraged to interact with other researchers sharing similar interests. They may also participate in teaching, thesis supervision, and ongoing research projects at the EUI. Fellowships can last up to ten months, but they are not typically awarded for July or August.
Fellows receive a monthly stipend of €3,000, although this amount is reduced for those living within 90 km of Florence. The fellowship does not cover travel, removal, or installation expenses. Fellows must have valid medical insurance for the duration of their stay, either privately arranged or through the EUI’s insurance at their own cost. Visa and residence support is available for non-EU fellows and their immediate family members.
The program is open to scholars of all nationalities. Former EUI professors or fellows can reapply after a three-year gap from their last contract. Applicants must have a good command of English and any language relevant to their research. Selection is made by departmental faculty, with final approval from the Executive Committee. The decision is final and cannot be appealed.
To apply, candidates must submit a short CV (up to five pages) with a selected list of publications, a research proposal of 2–4 pages, and a copy of a valid ID. Files must be submitted in appropriate formats, avoiding special characters and password protection. While reference letters are not required at the application stage, applicants must provide contact details of two referees for possible follow-up by the EUI.
