Deadline: 20-Aug-2025
The British Academy is inviting proposals for its Mid-Career Fellowship Programme, designed to support outstanding individual researchers with excellent research ideas while promoting public engagement and understanding in the humanities and social sciences. This fellowship allows successful applicants to step away from their usual academic and administrative duties for 6 to 12 months to focus fully on completing a major research project.
In addition to research, the Academy values a clear commitment to public engagement, encouraging fellows to communicate their findings to a broad audience. The awards target researchers who can advance understanding in their fields and contribute strategically to the social sciences and humanities.
The funding covers up to £80,000 toward the fellow’s salary, with the total award not expected to exceed £152,000, covering up to 80% of full economic costs. Fellowships last between 6 and 12 months.
Eligible applicants must be employed at UK universities, Higher Education institutions, or Independent Research Organisations. The programme primarily supports mid-career scholars who have made outstanding contributions and demonstrated excellence in communication. Eligibility is not determined by age but by career stage—typically within 15 years of receiving a doctorate or within 15 years of the first academic appointment for those without doctorates. The Academy also considers career breaks in assessing eligibility.
