Deadline: 06-Oct-2025
The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) is inviting proposals for Joint Research Projects under its Indo-Pacific Initiative, supported by funding from the Government of Canada.
The thematic areas for this year’s call for applications include: space, energy security, regional security, supply chain resilience, critical minerals, and emerging technologies (including digital governance and artificial intelligence).
Proposals must be jointly developed by at least one Canada-based institution and at least one institution based in the Indo-Pacific, with the Canadian partner serving as the lead applicant and grant holder. Each project may receive up to C$50,000 in funding, which must be expended by March 31, 2026. The awarded grant will be disbursed to the Canadian lead, who may sub-grant to Indo-Pacific partners as necessary. A two-page summary report will be required by April 30, 2026.
Eligible costs include travel directly related to the joint research, research or project assistants, and local interpretation or translation services. All travel expenses must comply with the Canadian federal government’s travel directive, with airfare limited to the lowest-fare economy class on the most direct route. Alcohol, gifts, bonuses, gratuities, and partisan-focused activities are not eligible for funding.
Proposals must not exceed five pages and should clearly address the policy focus and relevance, partnership roles, approach and activities, and outputs with mobilization plans. Annexes, not counted toward the page limit, must include a detailed workplan with milestones and a budget with justifications.
Applications will be assessed based on their policy relevance and impact for Canadian stakeholders, the quality and feasibility of the research design, the strength and complementarity of the partnership, and the clarity of outputs and knowledge-mobilization strategies. The application deadline is October 6, 2025, with decision notifications to follow on October 20, 2025. Projects must be completed by March 31, 2026.
