Deadline: 07-Oct-2025
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is now open for applications for the 2026–2027 academic year. This program offers American graduate students the opportunity to conduct dissertation research in Egypt, promoting academic growth and cross-cultural understanding between Egypt and the United States.
The grant supports master’s and doctoral students in any field by allowing them to carry out research at Egyptian universities or research institutions, either public or private. The Fulbright Commission in Egypt assists students throughout the affiliation and pre-arrival process. It helps confirm institutional placement, manage government clearances, and provide logistical guidance for travel and arrival.
Grants are contingent on several factors, including medical and government clearance, funding availability, the security situation in Egypt, and the operational status of the Fulbright Program and host institutions. Clearance from the Egyptian government is mandatory before any award is finalized, and the Commission facilitates this process for applicants.
Fulbright grantees receive a stipend aligned with the cost of living in Egypt to support their housing, meals, and other living expenses. The grant also includes international travel support, accident and health insurance, and access to a 24/7 mental health support line. Additionally, grantees receive non-competitive eligibility status for federal employment for 12 months following the grant.
The stipend is valued at 40,000 Egyptian Pounds per month, and the grant runs for nine months from approximately September 1, 2026, to May 31, 2027. Grantees may also receive one-time allowances for expenses such as excess baggage, housing, local transportation, research materials, and language training.
Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens currently enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program in the United States and must remain enrolled throughout the duration of the grant. Ideal candidates are research-focused and have clearly developed projects that can be completed within nine months. Projects connected to the applicant’s graduate dissertation and showing familiarity with Egypt or the Arabic language are preferred.
Applicants should have sufficient proficiency in Arabic to carry out their proposed study. Those who show sensitivity to the geopolitical environment of the MENA region and demonstrate a commitment to the Fulbright mission of cultural exchange will be prioritized.
Employees of the U.S. Department of State, USAID, the Fulbright Commission in Egypt, or related contractors—and their immediate families—are not eligible until one year after their employment ends.
