Deadline: 19-Nov-2025
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Division of Research is inviting applications for its Collaborative Research program, which supports teams of two or more scholars working together to advance humanistic knowledge.
This initiative is designed to foster cooperation across institutions and disciplines, encouraging innovative approaches to humanities research that result in tangible interpretive products such as print publications.
The program welcomes projects rooted in a single field as well as interdisciplinary efforts, emphasizing the value of multiple perspectives and new avenues of inquiry. Partnerships may bring together research universities, teaching colleges, libraries, museums, independent research institutions, or tribal organizations. By facilitating such collaborations, NEH aims to strengthen the collective pursuit of humanities scholarship and ensure that research outcomes reach a wide audience.
Funding is available in two categories. The Planning International Collaboration option offers up to $25,000 for projects of six to twelve months that lay the groundwork for international research partnerships. The Manuscript Preparation category provides up to $250,000 for one to three years of work focused on producing scholarly manuscripts. An additional convening option offers up to $50,000 to support gatherings of collaborating scholars. In total, NEH anticipates allocating approximately $2.5 million for Fiscal Year 2025 under this program. Projects must begin between October 1, 2026, and September 1, 2027.
Eligible applicants include U.S.-based nonprofit organizations recognized under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, accredited institutions of higher education, state or local government agencies, and federally recognized Native American Tribal governments. Foreign organizations, individuals, and for-profit entities are not eligible. Applicants may apply individually or on behalf of a consortium, but all recipients must demonstrate a substantive role in carrying out the proposed research.
This opportunity underscores NEH’s commitment to fostering collaborative scholarship that deepens understanding of the human experience and enriches public knowledge through enduring humanities research.
