Deadline: 15-Sep-2025
The Sher-Gil Sundaram Arts Foundation (SSAF) and Asia Art Archive (AAA) in India have announced the SSAF–AAA Research Grant for Archiving Histories of Art, Ideas, and Visual Culture. This grant supports interdisciplinary efforts to document and explore fragile and often inaccessible archives, particularly those involving visual and cultural print materials such as books, pamphlets, posters, journals, and ephemera. Emphasizing regional languages, the initiative seeks to uncover material that is out of circulation or not held in public collections, aiming to make them accessible and relevant.
Applicants are encouraged to submit proposals that investigate how such materials influenced or were part of cultural and political moments in history. Research can explore social and political movements, the contributions of key individuals like artists or editors, and the translation of ideas across languages and disciplines. The grant promotes creative and contextually rich methodologies for interpreting materials and creating public archives that can reshape our understanding of history and culture.
The grant offers up to INR 3,00,000 for projects running from 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026. Grantees are expected to propose ways of sharing their research in the public domain, such as through digital platforms, essays, or partnerships with institutions. Sensitivity to content rights and practical deliverables is essential. At the end of the project, selected materials may be handed over to SSAF and AAA.
Indian nationals or collectives residing in India are eligible to apply. Proposals will be evaluated on their originality, feasibility, and the ability to bring lesser-known materials and languages into scholarly and public focus. Applications must include a completed form, CV, publications or portfolio, and a detailed project proposal with images, timeline, and budget. Submissions can be made in English or any Indian language.
