Nominations are now open for the Town of Port Hedland and BHP Community Sports Awards to recognise the talent, ambition and sportsmanship of sports people and clubs across Hedland.
The Awards are proudly presented by the Town and BHP, along with Award Sponsor Horizon Power and Supporter The Esplanade Hotel.
The Awards recognise the tireless work of individuals who contribute their time and efforts to growing Hedland’s sporting diversity and participation.

- Junior Sportsman of the Year
- Sporting Group of the Year
- Umpire / Official of the Year
- Sportsman of the Year
- Sportswoman of the Year
- Coach of the Year
- Volunteer of the Year
- Service to Sport (new category in 2022)
Criteria
- Junior Sportswoman of the Year
- Must be aged 17 and under as at 31 Oct 2021.
- Selected through a formal process and competed at Regional, Country, State, National and/or International Championship program or similar event.
- Not been suspended, disciplined, or reprimanded at any level of competition.
- Reside within the Town of Port Hedland LGA.
- Sportsman of the Year
- Must be aged 18 and over as at 31 Oct 2021.
- Selected through a formal process and competed at Regional, Country, State, National and/or International Championship program or similar event.
- Not been suspended, disciplined, or reprimanded at any level of competition.
- Reside within the Town of Port Hedland LGA.
- Junior Sportsman of the Year
- Must be aged 17 and under as at 31 Oct. 2021.
- Selected through a formal process and competed at Regional, Country, State, National and/or International Championship program or similar event.
- Not been suspended, disciplined, or reprimanded at any level of competition.
- Reside within the Town of Port Hedland LGA.
- Sportswoman of the Year
- Must be aged 18 and over as at 31 Oct. 2021.
- Selected through a formal process and competed at Regional, Country, State, National and/or International Championship, program, or similar event.
- Not been suspended, disciplined, or reprimanded at any level of competition.
- Reside within the Town of Port Hedland LGA.
- Sporting Group of the Year
- Base of Operations or Clubhouse located within the Town of Port Hedland LGA.
- Club has participated in Club Development Program workshops in 2021 calendar year.
- Has maintained or increased membership numbers from previous year.
- Appropriate levels of ‘best practice’ surrounding club governance and management are evident.
- Club is actively working towards FUTURECLUBS status.
- Club can demonstrate sound financial management.
- Coach of the Year
- Coached a team, squad and/or athlete and resided within the Town of Port Hedland LGA in 2021.
- Completed minimum Level 1 National Coaching Accreditation Course.
- Through their leadership, improved the level of performance of the team and / or individual athlete.
- Has not been suspended, disciplined, or reprimanded at any level of competition.
- Contributed to the development of junior sport in the 2021 calendar year.
- Umpire/Official of the Year
- Officiated at sporting fixtures/events within the Reside within the Town of Port Hedland in 2021.
- Completed minimum Level 1 Nationally Accredited Umpiring course.
- Exhibited good knowledge of specific sport rules and regulations.
- Exercised sound judgement and consistent fair decisions.
- Volunteer of the Year
- Undertaken a role/s in a club/association during 2021.
- Actively contributed to clubs/associations objectives during 2021.
- Assisted with clubs/associations program and service delivery.
- Did not receive remuneration for their services to their clubs/association.
- Service to Sport
- Length of service to sporting/community (minimum 10 years service).
- Number of sporting organisations engaged overtime.
- Demonstrated contribution to the sport or industry.
- Demonstrated achievement or legacy as a result of contribution
