The Sport Championship Funding Program has been established to attract high-quality, financially sustainable sporting events to the Bundaberg Region, helping to strengthen the area’s reputation as a vibrant hub for competitive sport.
The program aims to support events that not only bring participants and visitors to the region but also deliver lasting social and economic benefits to the local community. Recognised by the relevant sporting authorities, these events are an important part of Bundaberg’s strategy to promote active lifestyles, tourism, and regional development.
The program covers three main categories of sporting events. The International or National Sporting Event category supports competitions that draw more than 20% of total participants from outside Australia or across the nation. The State Sporting Event category targets events that attract participants from across Queensland, with the majority coming from outside the Bundaberg area. Finally, the Regional Significant Sporting Event category supports competitions that involve participants from surrounding regions, encouraging regional engagement and collaboration.
Eligible not-for-profit sporting organisations based within the Bundaberg Regional Council area can apply for up to $5,000 in funding. To qualify, organisations must be incorporated with a sporting objective, hold a current Public Liability insurance certificate, and either possess an Australian Business Number or provide a Statement by a Supplier form. Organisations may also act as an auspice body for another eligible organisation while remaining eligible to submit their own funding application.
However, certain groups and activities are not eligible for funding. These include national, state, or regional sporting organisations; political groups; government agencies; private and commercial entities; schools and universities; and individuals. Additionally, funding cannot be used to cover retrospective costs, insurance expenses, event bid costs, appearance fees, prizes, alcohol, or the purchase of office equipment.
The Sport Championship Funding Program plays a crucial role in strengthening Bundaberg’s sporting landscape by helping local organisations host events that attract visitors, generate economic activity, and foster community pride. Through this initiative, Bundaberg Regional Council continues to invest in sports as a driver of regional growth, opportunity, and connection.
