The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has issued a Call for Expression of Interest under Lot 12 – Environment Activities, aimed at supporting environmental protection and restoration efforts in refugee-hosting areas.
In Tanzania’s Kigoma Region, a critical initiative is underway to enhance environmental sustainability and natural resource management in and around refugee camps. Under Outcome Area 9: Sustainable Housing and Settlements, the program aims to improve the management of landscapes to ensure they remain adaptive, resilient, and capable of supporting both refugees and host communities. With the growing environmental pressures linked to displacement, the initiative—supported by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)—seeks to promote long-term ecological balance and strengthen the foundation for sustainable living.
The core objective of this effort is to ensure that shared natural resources are protected, restored, and sustainably managed. A key element of the program involves the use of cost-effective, nature-based solutions, such as the reintroduction and management of indigenous vegetation. These methods are designed to rehabilitate degraded land and enhance biodiversity while providing natural resilience against environmental stressors.
To monitor environmental health and ensure long-term results, a strong focus is placed on tracking changes in trees, water, and soil through an improved environmental monitoring program. The initiative also includes the development and implementation of a comprehensive environmental and social management plan to tackle the impacts of climate change and degradation across the camps and surrounding areas.
Addressing soil erosion is another priority. By identifying erosion-prone zones, the program supports the development of integrated soil conservation strategies that protect land and improve agricultural potential. In addition, wildfire risks within camp woodlots are being addressed through a dedicated wildfire management program to preserve essential forest resources and ensure safety.
The initiative is also rooted in community participation. Refugees and host communities are engaged through a Community-Based Environmental Management Programme, fostering ownership and collective responsibility for sustainable practices. Environmental education is being widely promoted, including the formation of Environment and Energy School Clubs, to raise awareness and build a culture of conservation among both youth and adults.
Waste management is another critical focus. An integrated waste management system is being established to reduce pollution and promote cleaner, healthier living environments. Regular evaluations and monthly progress reporting ensure that all activities are aligned with the initiative’s goals and adapted as needed.
Through these combined efforts, the program represents a forward-looking response to environmental challenges in displacement settings. By restoring ecosystems, managing resources wisely, and engaging communities, it creates a sustainable path forward that benefits both refugees and their host communities.
